UPDATE:?He?s back. Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston confirms that Bobby Valentine will indeed be the next manager of the Red Sox.

Valentine?was offered the job while he was away on personal business in Japan and immediately accepted.?He is expected to fly back home tomorrow while CSNNE.com reports that he will likely be introduced as Boston?s new skipper during a press conference Thursday.

Valentine, now 61 years old, hasn?t managed in the majors since 2002. He has a 1117-1072 record (.510) over 15 seasons between the Rangers and Mets.

While Valentine has his fair share of critics (and enemies) around the game, baseball is more fun with him in the dugout. Or at least more interesting. And with the Red Sox still reeling from one of the worst collapses in baseball history, this will be a fascinating situation to watch.

7:13 PM: Nothing official from the team yet, but?Mike Lynch of?WCVB-TV in Boston is reporting that the Red Sox and Bobby Valentine have reached a ?verbal agreement? for him to be the team?s next manager.

We have heard conflicting reports this afternoon about whether Tigers third base coach?Gene Lamont is still in the mix for the job. As of this evening, Lamont was told that he is still a candidate.

Valentine is expected to return from Japan tomorrow, so we?ll likely hear something official in the next 24 hours.

2014 Nissan Altima Hybrid Tech Preview

Nissan's flagship mid-size sedan gets an overhaul next year, when the all-new 2013 Nissan Altima debuts. The following year, the 2014 Altima will feature an all-new Nissan-designed powertrain that includes the Altima's first hybrid engine. The full specs of the system have not yet been released, but at a technology briefing in Tokyo, we were able to discover some details of the upcoming hybrid.

The Engine

A supercharger will feed the new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine used in the hybrid Altima. Nissan says this results in a solid boost of torque at a low rpm. Why not a turbo? Engineers mentioned that a turbo would require direct fuel injection, and that would bump up the cost. The supercharger allows Nissan to use the less expensive port fuel injection.

Nissan already features a 1.2-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine in its Micra. That smaller displacement engine will also receive the hybrid treatment and find itself in a future small car in the U.S., according to sources in Tokyo.

The 2.5-liter hybrid drivetrain is partnered with a new CVT transmission that we had a chance to sample in a current Altima. The new CVT is said to provide about a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy, thanks to a 40 percent reduction in friction that comes largely from lower-viscosity fluid, a more efficient pump, and chain drive.

The new transmission has a wider gear spread as well, for quicker off-the-line bursts and lower cruising rpm. At 50 mph, an Altima?s engine with the current CVT revs at about 1500 rpm. The new transmission will drop that number by about 400 rpm at the same speed. This new transmission is lighter than the old one, too.

The Drive

On Nissan?s test track, the lowered rpms are certainly noticeable. At freeway speeds, the current Altima with the new CVT was quieter and more relaxed. But floor the throttle and it seemed more sprightly and much less like a traditional CVT. The transmission?s simulated gear changes were much more like those of a conventional automatic?more direct and less like the elastic feel that tends to define CVT transmissions. In our brief test drive, the new CVT was an impressive move forward.

The Electronics

The new system uses a one-electric-motor, two-clutch design that?s fed by a lithium-ion battery. It?s similar in concept to the one used in the Infiniti M Hybrid. But here, the layout has been modified to work in a front-wheel-drive layout.

The battery pack will be only about half as large as the 1.3-kwh pack in the Infiniti. However, a Nissan engineer says, combined with the new supercharged four-cylinder, it would deliver about the same power output as the current 3.5-liter V-6: around 270 hp. And we?d be surprised if the new Altima hybrid didn?t return at least 40 mpg combined when it arrives in two years.

Bieber fever dominates Bing search in 2011

LOS ANGELES?? Teen singing sensation Justin Bieber was named the most searched person this year on Internet search engine Bing on Monday, edging out reality TV star Kim Kardashian and "Friends" actress Jennifer Aniston.

In a survey conducted by Microsoft's search engine, Bieber fever took over Bing in 2011 as the Canadian singer, 17, moved from last year's No. 6 position to become the most searched name and musician, based on billions of search queries during the year. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

Bieber was the only male to feature in the top 10 list, as Kardashian fell from last year's No. 1 position and Aniston moved from last year's No. 9 position to No. 3 this year, with her rising profile attributed to a burgeoning film career and highly-publicized private life.

Actresses Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox and singers Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus rounded out most searched names.

Despite "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1" taking in $489.3 million at global box offices so far, the vampire flick was beaten by the latest installment of the "Mission Impossible" franchise as the most searched film of the year, with "Ghost Protocol" due for release in December.

"American Idol" was the most searched TV show and reality TV show this year, while Britain's royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton in April was the most searched celebrity event of the year.

Bing's survey also highlighted the most searched news stories this year, with the "Casey Anthony Trial" topping a list of high-profile events from around the world, including "Osama Bin Laden Death," "Michael Jackson trial/Conrad Murray" and "Japan Earthquake/Tsunami."

Rockets fired from Lebanon hit Israel: army (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Several rockets fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel on Tuesday, and the Jewish state returned fire across the border in response, military officials said.

Two buildings in the western Galilee area were damaged, Israeli media said, but there were no reported casualties. Residents said they heard two explosions and that houses shook.

An Israeli military spokesman said the rockets were the first fired since 2009 across a border where a 34-day war was fought in 2006 between Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas based in Lebanon.

"Several rockets hit the western Galilee. The Israeli army considers the incident severe and is targeting origins of fire," said a statement from the military spokesman's office.

The Ynet news Web site said residents saw plumes of smoke where the rockets struck.

The Israeli-Lebanese border has been largely quiet in recent years, though some have worried about a possible spillover of tensions from a months-old revolt in Syria against President Bashar al-Assad and from a stiffening of Western sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

Funeral held for NJ tot found in car seat in creek (AP)

ASBURY PARK, N.J. ? A 2-year-old girl whose smile was so widely known among congregants that they dubbed her "the church baby" was laid to rest Monday, a week after she was tossed into a creek, still strapped into her car seat.

A nationwide manhunt was under way for her father, 27-year-old Arthur Morgan III, who was added this weekend as a featured fugitive on "America's Most Wanted" website. He is charged with murdering her last week by leaving her in a park creek.

Three people carried Tierra Morgan-Glover's tiny coffin from the Cathedral International of Asbury Park, while a minister followed with a large stuffed teddy bear.

During a videotaped eulogy, Bishop Donald Hilliard Jr. tried to comfort mourners.

"As she was placed into that creek, an angel caught her," Hilliard said. "She did not suffer at all."

Family members didn't speak during the service, and they declined to talk with reporters gathered outside the church.

The girl's mother, Imani Benton, was helped into the church, supported on either side by relatives. She clutched a bouquet of purple and white roses, which were later placed on the child's 3-foot-long white casket. Tierra was wearing a white dress and had several gold bracelets on her wrist.

She never returned home from a court-approved visit with her father on Nov. 21. She was found the next day in her car seat, which was partially submerged in a creek in a park in Wall Township, about 20 miles north of her Lakehurst home. Her cause of death was listed as homicidal violence.

Authorities say the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service are among several agencies searching for Tierra's father. They believe Morgan fled the state and may have headed out West after Tierra was killed.

"He remains a fugitive from justice, and we are still looking for him," said Christopher Gramiccioni, a spokesman for the Monmouth County prosecutor's office.

Hundreds of mourners packed the church to hear clergy members recall the toddler whose pleasant disposition was known throughout the congregation.

"Some babies just know church," said the Rev. Deniece Reid. "This baby knew church. She knew Jesus."

The Rev. Bernadette Glover, the church's executive pastor, compared Tierra to a fine cologne whose essence lingers in a room long after its bearer had gone.

"This beautiful child was an angel among us," she told mourners. "We are all here today because we have been touched by an angel. Every life matters to God, no matter how short it is."

An obituary prepared by the church gave the child's full name as Tierra La'Shae Camaya Morgan-Glover, "a bright-eyed little girl with a warm smile."

"Because of Tierra's delightful personality, she soon became `The Church Baby' at Cathedral International of Asbury Park," the obituary said. "Tierra was a talented and advanced 2-year-old. She enjoyed singing, loved mathematics, and was always eager to learn."

In his eulogy, Hilliard invoked the afterlife, promising mourners, "You will see your baby again."

Chael Sonnen and Arianny Celeste engage in war of words

Chael Sonnen knows how to start a fight. Though his sharp words are usually aimed at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and anyone who supports Silva, he turned towards UFC Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste when asked about her in an interview to promote the World MMA Awards.

He was asked who he is supporting for Ring Girl of the Year in the awards ceremony that will take place in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

We only had one and that was Chandella [Powell]. The other was the IQ card girl. Arianny [Celeste] kind of walks around and holds up her latest test score. One time when there was a title fight, she got all the way up to five and we were very proud of her.

Ouch. Celeste and Sonnen then sparred on Twitter with messages that have been deleted. Celeste started:

Hey what's ur name.. after @spideranderson kicks your [expletive]..u won't even be able to count to 5!! Get ready to kiss brazils [expletive]!

And Sonnen's reply:

Seems easy to wear a bikini and seems easy to walk in a circle, but try walking in a circle while wearing a bikini. Talented girl.

The original interviewer didn't ask Sonnen about the source of his issues with Celeste, but with Sonnen, he usually doesn't need a reason to call someone out. He became angry with Canada for no good reason, and a man who can hate that lovely, docile country for no good reason could easily extend his dislike to Celeste.

At the same time, it could also be Sonnen's marketing mind at work. He is hosting the awards, meaning that there is a fair to middling chance that he will have to share a stage with Celeste. This spat sure makes you want to watch the awards on FoxSports.com, doesn't it?

Peru official resigns amid mining protests (AP)

LIMA, Peru ? A key official in Peru's Environment Ministry has resigned as protests persist against a $4.8 billion gold mining project by peasants who fear it will damage their water supply.

Deputy minister Jose de Echave tells The Associated Press that he quit Monday because the government "lacks an adequate strategy for dealing with social conflict."

He criticizes the decision to put the chief Cabinet minister in control of environmental impact studies for mining. Activsts say that will further emasculate the Environment Ministry, which already must defer to the Mining Ministry on such matters.

U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corp. suspended construction at the Conga gold mine for a fourth day Monday due to continuing protests.

FCC to let AT&T pull merger application: report (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Federal Communications Commission planned to approve AT&T Inc's request to withdraw its application for approval of its acquisition of T-Mobile USA, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

AT&T and T-Mobile USA owner Deutsche Telekom AG said last week they wanted to withdraw their application with the FCC to focus on defending their $39 billion deal from a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Justice Department.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? State refiners could cut retail prices of petrol by about one rupee a litre or 1.5 percent as softening Singapore spot gasoline prices have offset the impact of a declining rupee, an industry source said on Monday.

The companies cut petrol prices by about 3.2 percent earlier this month, the first reduction in retail prices in nearly three years and the first since prices were decontrolled in June 2010.

"As per current calculations, there is scope to cut the basic price of petrol by about 0.85 rupees a litre, including taxes it should be about one rupee. We have to see price movements in the next two days also before deciding the final impact," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Refiners discuss prices every two weeks and so far in this fortnight, spot FOB gasoline prices in Singapore have averaged $108.76 a barrel compared with $114.13 in the previous fortnight, according to Reuters calculations.

Oil companies had earlier this month cut petrol prices considering the rupee average at 49.30 to a dollar, an Indian Oil Corp press release said. Since then, Reuters data shows the rupee has declined to an average 51.78.

India's three state fuel retailing giants, IOC, Hindustan Petroleum Corp and Bharat Petroleum Corp tend to move their prices in tandem.

Petrol is nowhere near as widely used as diesel in India -- accounting for around 10 percent of fuel demand compared with about 40 percent for diesel -- but it is high-profile because it powers many of the cars owned by the growing middle class.

Gasoline has a 1.09 percent weighting in the inflation index and near double-digit consumer prices have provoked criticism of the government, which subsidises other fuels such as diesel and cooking gas.

The widening price gap between petrol and diesel has slowed the growth of petrol consumption, which has recently fallen behind that of diesel.

Influential New Hampshire newspaper backs Gingrich (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? New Hampshire's largest newspaper endorsed Newt Gingrich in the Republican presidential race on Sunday, giving the former House speaker a boost in a state where Mitt Romney has been expected to excel.

The endorsement validates Gingrich's recent rise as a candidate -- months after many political pundits thought his campaign was as good as over following a series of missteps -- and is a blow to Romney's aspirations.

"Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate," the New Hampshire Union Leader said in an editorial. "But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running."

The conservative-leaning newspaper, the only state-wide daily, is influential in New Hampshire, where the January 10 Republican primary is seen as crucial for candidates hoping to build campaign momentum.

The newspaper said Gingrich "has the experience, the leadership qualities and the vision to lead this country in these trying times" and praised his "innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership."

"A lot of candidates say they're going to improve Washington. Newt Gingrich has actually done that, and in this race he offers the best shot of doing it again," it said.

This month Gingrich surged to the front of the national Republican field. A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed him with 24 percent support, compared to Romney's 22 percent.

But Romney, a former governor of neighboring Massachusetts who owns a large vacation home in New Hampshire, has mostly been floating far above his challengers and has campaigned actively in the state.

Romney still has big leads in most polls of New Hampshire voters with average support of 36.8 percent to Gingrich's 18.5 percent, according to the www.realclearpolitics.com website.

Still, some surveys suggest that Romney's support has been driven more by name recognition -- as Massachusetts governor he was seen frequently on television in populous southern New Hampshire -- than by true passion among voters.

A survey by The Polling Company Inc showed Romney with 35 percent support from 500 likely voters, ahead of Gingrich at 18 percent. But only 20 percent said they "definitely" planned to vote for Romney.

In the past week Romney has scored endorsements from two-thirds of New Hampshire's Republican congressional delegation: first-term U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte and Representative Charles Bass.

In the Union Leader editorial, publisher Joseph McQuaid did not mention Romney by name but said the newspaper's readers "know that we don't back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers."

The newspaper also bypassed Romney during the 2008 Republican primary. It endorsed Senator John McCain, who went on to win his party's nomination but lose to Barack Obama in the general election.

Romney's campaign did not immediately respond to calls for comment but another Republican candidate, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman said on the "Fox News Sunday" program that the endorsement "once again proves how fluid and unpredictable New Hampshire is."

Two BSkyB shareholders to vote against Murdoch at AGM: reports (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Two top 10 shareholders in BSkyB will vote against James Murdoch remaining as chairman of the company at its AGM on Tuesday, according to newspaper reports on Sunday.

The Sunday Telegraph said Legal and General (L&G) will vote against Murdoch, while the Sunday Times said Kames Capital has urged Murdoch to quit.

The Sunday Telegraph said while L&G raised no ethical issues about the way Murdoch operated, its concerns related to his ability to retain independence following News Corp's failed bid for the British broadcaster.

The Sunday Times also said Kames Capital will vote against his re-election as it wants an independent chairman.

L&G has a 2.9 percent stake in BSkyB, while Kames Capital has 1.6 percent, according to Reuters data.

Earlier this month, the company's independent directors unanimously backed James Murdoch as chairman in a letter addressing shareholders' concerns about his suitability following the phone-hacking scandal at the News of the World.
