The code name for this initiative is called ?Kings of the Game? and their announcement will be made during theNBA?All Star Weekend in Orlando.

These exhibition basketball events are coordinated by?MISSION ONE VOICE?(MOV), a collaborative venture between the?Center for American Military Music Opportunities(C*A*M*M*O),?Lerer Media?and the?Professional Basketball Alumni Association.
The ?Kings of the Game? initiative will consist of professional players and service members from all branches of the United States Armed Forces and will be held at various military installations and select venues across the country.??Each exhibition team will consist of both professional players and military players competing against other exhibition teams.??Military players may be either enlisted service men or veterans.

Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg: Occupy the Criminal Justice System: From Stop-and-Frisk to Prison Cells

On Monday, February 20, actions will be occurring across the country in solidarity with the more than 2 million people locked in cages -- the incarcerated. Monday, is National Occupy Day in Support of Prisoners.

"OWS is a struggle for human rights," said Jay Chiu, an activist with Occupy Wall Street. "You can't take a stand against severe economic inequity, the denial of human rights, and the universal dominance of the 1 percent -- some of which are private prison execs who spend millions every year lobbying our politicians -- without also denouncing the prison industrial complex."

The U.S. has the world's highest documented incarceration rate. (Russia is second, Rwanda is third.) More blacks are under correctional control today than were enslaved in 1850. These unprecedented rates of incarceration have helped turn the two largest for-profit prison corporations, Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group, into billion-dollar companies, according to Unholy Alliance, a report released in November 2011 by Public Campaign and PICO National Network.

So what can hurt these profits? Well, let's let Corrections Corporation of America speak for itself. This is from its 10K to the SEC:

The demand for our facilities and services could be adversely affected by the relaxation of enforcement efforts, leniency in conviction or parole standards and sentencing practices or through the decriminalization of certain activities that are currently proscribed by our criminal laws. For instance, any changes with respect to drugs and controlled substances or illegal immigration could affect the number of persons arrested, convicted, and sentenced, thereby potentially reducing demand for correctional facilities to house them.

Legislation has been proposed in numerous jurisdictions that could lower minimum sentences for some non-violent crimes and make more inmates eligible for early release based on good behavior. Also, sentencing alternatives under consideration could put some offenders on probation with electronic monitoring who would otherwise be incarcerated.

The private prison industry has devoted time and money to ensuring that crime legislation benefits their financial interests. They have donated millions to political candidates and parties, as well as helped pass more punitive sentencing laws.

"Through involvement in the leadership of ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council), private prison companies have played a key role in lobbying for and passing harsher sentencing for non-violent offenses including three-strike laws, mandatory sentencing, and truth-in-sentencing," according to the report, Unholy Alliance.

If you weren't part of the 99% when you went in to prison, you most certainly are as a prisoner: a number; a person whose potential sexual abuse is mocked in television and movies; a person whose brutalization is taken for granted; a person who can be subjected to cruel but shamefully not unusual punishments, like solitary confinement; a person who can be discriminated against in housing, employment and public benefits once you are released.

But the vast majority of those incarcerated and those targeted by the criminal justice system -- from stop-and-frisk to conviction -- are the 99%.

"Being racially profiled by the police, stopped and frisked all the time, being arrested for walking into my building without an ID makes me part of the 99%," Frankie, 22 years old and from the Bronx, told Occupy Our Stories. Occupy Our Stories records and shares the stories of the 99%.

Frankie continued: "I worked for McDonald's, I worked for a couple of Papa John's... It was always minimum wage. Each and every job I had I went up to the managerial position and see nothing but a 20 cent raise."

Frankie is one of hundreds of thousands who have been harassed by the police as part of its stop-and-frisk campaign. Eighty-seven percent of the 684,330 stopped by the NYPD in 2011 were black or Latino. Ninety-two percent were male.

And so today we march to end a criminal justice system that casts young men of color as perennial criminals. We march in solidarity with those locked away in cages, and their loved ones. We march in solidarity with those killed by the State -- in their homes; on the street, the night before their wedding; on their front steps; in the prisons.

Human and humanoid robot shake hands in space 1st

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? Astronauts and robots have united in space with a healthy handshake.

The commander of the International Space Station, Daniel Burbank, shook hands Wednesday with Robonaut. It's the first handshake ever between a human and a humanoid in space.

NASA's Robonaut was launched aboard space shuttle Discovery last February. Crews have been testing it to see how it one day might help astronauts perform space station chores.

On Wednesday, ground controllers activated computer software that enabled the robot to extend its right hand, fingers outstretched. Burbank took the mechanical hand and pumped it up and down, as the robot's fingers tightened around his hand.

"The first human-humanoid handshake in space," Burbank proclaimed.

A cheer went up in the control room in Huntsville, Ala.

"For the record, it was a firm handshake," Burbank radioed. "Quite an impressive robot."

Robonaut ? the first humanoid in space, built from the waist up ? said via Twitter that it was an awesome experience, then followed up with some sign language.

"The handshake was definitely one of the highlights of the day, but I'm not done yet," Robonaut said in a tweet. (A NASA spokeswoman actually files the tweets under the handle AstroRobonaut.)

"Did you catch that? I don't have a voice, but I sent you a message -- Hello world ... in sign language!" Robonaut tweeted. "What a day! I passed my tests with flying colors!!!"

Dutch space station astronaut Andre Kuipers couldn't resist a little robot humor.

"Now let's hope he's never heard of HAL9000, Skynet or Cylons," Kuipers wrote in a tweet.

HAL was the conspiring computer in "2001: A Space Odyssey." The people-hating artificial intelligence system Skynet is from the "Terminator" films, while Cylons are cyber-warriors from "Battleship Gallactica."

Robonaut spends most of its time in hibernation aboard the space station. The astronauts bring the humanoid out every so often for testing; it was awakened in space last August and made its first motion in October. A future model could venture outside for spacewalks, saving its human companions time and keeping them safe.

Why Obama's Re-election Fortunes Are Looking Up (Time.com)

President Obama's performance in head-to-head matchups with his Republican competitors, especially Mitt Romney, have dramatically improved in recent weeks. In a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for People & the Press, Obama went from being tied with Romney in trial heats last fall to holding an eight-point lead in the fresh batch of data released this week. The turnaround was even faster in the New York Times/CBS News poll, which found Obama trailing Romney by two points in January and up by six this week. The reasons might not be immediately apparent.

Presidential approval has not seen huge gains since the end of last year: Gallup tracking data show Obama's job approval rating very close to where it was in mid-October of 2011 -- and in mid-October of 2010 for that matter -- dipping just under water-level in the mid-40s. There are a few surveys that show something closer to 50, but national approval figures may actually overstate the President's position. Michael Scherer recently illustrated the degree to which Obama's approval ratings in key swing states lagged behind national trends in 2011, while worse unemployment numbers dogged those same core states. So how can we square those facts with what we're seeing in the head-to-head polls? (See Michael Scherer's story on the swing states.)

For one, swing states may decide presidential elections, but their economic health does not. As George Washington political science professor John Sides explains:

First, Thomas Holbrook found that state-level economies -- measured with unemployment or changes in real per capita income -- had no relationship to presidential election outcomes in the states in 1960-84, once measures of the national economy were taken into account. Second, Daniel Eisenberg and Jonathan Ketchum's study of the 1972-2000 elections also finds that the national economy outweighs the effect of state and county economies. (See pictures of Barack Obama's campaign behind the scenes.)

In this context, Obama's brighter general election prospects begin to make sense. Voters might not feel like he's doing a much better job, but they are beginning to feel better about the direction of the country economically, a dynamic which favors the incumbent. Three-quarters of Americans still believe the economy is in bad shape, according to the NYT/CBS poll, but the remaining 23% who say things are good is the highest level since last spring. More importantly, the number of Americans who think the economy is improving -- absolutes are less important in politics than a feeling of positive movement -- has grown even faster: 34% in the same survey, up six percentage points in a month. Gallup data also show the highest economic confidence level in a year, and the crucial outlook number overtook appraisals of current conditions in December, a trendline that holds promise for the current occupants of the White House:

The second piece of this puzzle is Mitt Romney. Romney has long been the strongest general-election player in the GOP field, but the savage primary fight is beginning to take a toll. Romney's unfavorability rating has reached its highest mark -- 49% in the Pew poll -- since his debut on the national stage in 2007. The number of voters who perceived him as "untrustworthy" leaped from 32% a month prior to 45% this week. The number of independents who said he was prepared to be President dropped 10 percentage points to 48%, and their candidate preference swung narrowly to Obama. Where Romney once out-performed the likes of Rick Santorum in these trial heats, the latest polls found only a one-point difference between the two. (See pictures of Barack Obama on Flickr.)

It could all shift again. The GOP race has taken plenty of hairpin turns already and when (or if) Romney secures his track to the nomination, there will be a period of calm in which he can work to restore his standing with independents or drag Obama's numbers back down. Presidential candidates in years past have been scarred by primary scrapes only to appear unblemished for the general election. Economic confidence is still low, the recovery may darken again under the cloud of Europe and the President faces a daunting re-election task either way. But for this snapshot in time, a weakened Romney and a strengthened economy make for the best outlook Obama's had in quite some time.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Groupon had a lot to prove with its first earnings report as a public company. The nearly 14 percent slide in its stock Thursday suggests investors were not impressed.

The online deals site on Wednesday reported sharply higher fourth-quarter revenue that surpassed Wall Street's expectations. But some analysts worry about the trajectory suggested by its revenue forecast of $510 million to $550 million for the current quarter.

The guidance means Groupon Inc. expects revenue to grow by about 5 percent in the first three months of this year, compared with the last three months of 2011. By that same measure, revenue grew by a double-digit percentage in each quarter of 2011. That suggests growth is slowing down, said Collins Stewart analyst Mayuresh Masurekar.

Groupon's growth from signing up more subscribers and adding to its list of merchants is slowing, Masurekar said in a note to investors.

Chicago-based Groupon is expanding abroad, sending subscribers coupons personalized to their tastes and offering new types of deals, but growth from those initiatives may not be enough to counteract its slowing daily-deals business, Masurekar said.

Groupon makes money by sending its 33 million subscribers discounted deals on restaurant meals, manicures, gifts and a broad range of other offerings and taking a cut from what merchants take home.

The company posted an adjusted fourth-quarter loss of 2 cents per share, in large part because of unusually high international taxes. Analysts were expecting a profit of 3 cents per share

Its revenue grew 18 percent from the third quarter to the fourth, to $506.5 million. It was helped by strong holiday demand and special deals the company offered as part of its Grouponicus promotion, dubbed as Groupon's "wintertime celebration." Revenue increased 10 percent from the second quarter to the third and 33 percent from the first quarter to the second.

Still, Masurekar, along with other analysts, said Groupon's latest results were solid. Analysts don't suggest selling the stock, just waiting to see whether the company can show it can keep growing fast.

Morgan Stanley's Scott Devitt kept his rating on the stock as "Equal-weight," which means the analyst thinks the stock will trade in line with other industry stocks he covers.

Groupon, he said kept its competitive position, grew revenue while reducing marketing costs and showed no signs of "customer deal fatigue." Morgan Stanley was the main underwriter of Groupon's IPO.

Concerns about the sustainability of its easy-to-copy business model have dogged Groupon since before its November PO. Though its early growth was meteoric, rivals quickly popped up. And it drew scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission for the way it accounted for revenue in an early filing. The company restated its numbers to count as revenue only what it takes home, not the full amount that people pay for its deals.

Groupon has also been spending heavily on marketing to gain new subscribers and on hiring new workers at a frantic pace. It had about 10,000 employees as of last fall.

After pricing its IPO at $20, Groupon's stock has fluctuated between $14.85 and $31.14. On Thursday the stock fell $3.41 to close at $21.17.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) ? Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.

The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California's ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.

The Washington House passed the bill on a 55-43 vote. Supporters in the public viewing galleries stood and cheered as many on the Democratic side of the House floor hugged after the vote.

The state Senate approved the measure last week, and the bill now goes to Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire, who is expected to sign it into law next week.

Gregoire watched the vote in the wings with the bill's sponsor, Sen. Ed Murray, who is gay and has sponsored gay rights legislation for years. Murray said the vote marked "a day that will be remembered in the history of this state."

Gregoire issued a statement after the vote, saying it was "a major step toward completing a long and important journey to end discrimination based on sexual orientation."

Democratic Rep. Jamie Pedersen, a gay lawmaker from Seattle who also has sponsored gay rights bills for several years, said that he and his partner have been grateful for the rights that exist under the state's domestic partnership laws but such protections are "a pale and inadequate substitute for marriage."

Pedersen, during his remarks on the House floor, read from Tuesday's ruling by the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, citing a section that stated "marriage is the name that society gives to the relationship that matters most between two adults."

Several Republicans argued against the bill, saying that it goes against the tradition of marriage. Rep. Jay Rodne said the measure "severs the cultural, historical and legal underpinnings of the institution of marriage."

Despite the action, gay couples can't begin walking down the aisle just yet.

The proposal would take effect 90 days after the session ends next month but opponents have promised to fight gay marriage with a ballot measure that would allow voters to overturn the legislative approval.

If opponents gather enough signatures to take their fight to the ballot box, the law would be put on hold pending the outcome of a November election. Opponents must turn in more than 120,000 signatures by June 6 if they want to challenge the proposed law. Otherwise gay couples could wed starting in June.

Several Republican amendments were rejected, including one that would have added private businesses and individuals, such as bakers and photographers, to the exemption in the measure that doesn't require religious organizations or churches to perform marriages and doesn't subject them to penalties if they don't marry gay or lesbian couples. Another would have required a one-month residency requirement before people could get married in Washington.

Two Republicans ? Reps. Glenn Anderson of Fall City and Maureen Walsh of College Place ? crossed the aisle and voted in favor of the bill. Three Democrats voted against it: Reps. Chris Hurst of Enumclaw, Steve Kirby of Tacoma and Mark Miloscia of Federal Way. Democrats hold a 56-42 majority in the House.

Washington state has had domestic partnership laws since 2007, and more than a dozen other states have provisions, ranging from domestic partnerships to gay marriage, supporting same-sex couples.

Gay marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C.

Lawmakers in New Jersey are expected to vote on gay marriage next week, and Maine could see a gay marriage proposal on the November ballot.

Proposed amendments to ban gay marriage will be on the ballots in North Carolina in May and in Minnesota in November.

A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit ruled Tuesday against California's voter-approved same-sex marriage ban, known as Proposition 8.

The panel gave gay marriage opponents time to appeal the 2-1 decision before ordering the state to allow same-sex weddings to resume. The judges also said the decision only applies to California, even though the court has jurisdiction in nine western states.

Lawyers for the coalition of conservative religious groups that sponsored Proposition 8 said they have not decided if they will seek a new 9th Circuit hearing or file an appeal directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Washington state's momentum for same-sex marriage has been building and the debate has changed significantly since 1998, when lawmakers passed Washington's Defense of Marriage Act banning gay marriage. The constitutionality of that law ultimately was upheld by the state Supreme Court in 2006. But earlier that year, a gay civil rights measure passed after nearly 30 years of failure, signaling a change in the Legislature.

The quick progression of domestic partnership laws in the state came soon after, with a domestic partnership law in 2007, and two years of expansion that culminated in 2009 with "everything but marriage" expansion that was upheld by voters.

In October, a University of Washington poll found that an increasing number of people in the state support same-sex marriage. About 43 percent of respondents said they support gay marriage, up from 30 percent in the same poll five years earlier. Another 22 percent said they support giving identical rights to gay couples, without calling the unions "marriage."

If a challenge to gay marriage law was on the ballot, 55 percent said they would vote to uphold the law. And 38 percent said they would vote to reject a gay marriage law.

Same-sex marriage also has the backing of several prominent Pacific Northwest businesses, including Microsoft Corp., Nike Inc. and Starbucks Corp.

Analysis: Scandal blow puts Indian government in danger (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? There is no clamor for an early general election in India, but the latest blow dealt to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over a massive corruption scandal raises the risk that his wounded government could fall well before its mandate runs out in 2014.

Singh is unlikely to quit following last week's Supreme Court order for 122 telecoms licenses to be revoked, a deeply embarrassing ruling that accused the government of "virtually gifting away an important national asset at throwaway prices."

According to Sanjaya Basu, a former media adviser to the 79-year-old prime minister, Singh has seriously considered stepping down at times during the turbulence of the past 12 months but has plodded on out of loyalty to the ruling Congress party.

Few really know the prime minister's mind. Indeed Singh's public silence on many matters is the butt of internet jokes, one of which has his frustrated dentist telling him: "You can open your mouth now, I'm your dentist."

Even if Singh did go, he has several ambitious colleagues who could step in to lead Congress into the next elections, hoping that they can shake off the unpopularity that has closed in on the party since it won a second five-year term in 2009.

There was some rare relief for the government on Saturday, when a court cleared Singh's interior minister of signing off on the sale of the mobile network licenses, which may have cost the public exchequer up to $36 billion in lost revenues.

Buoyed by this ruling -- which kept the blame for short-changing the nation from spreading across Singh's cabinet -- the Congress party is most likely to try to limp on, just as it did through 2011.

Last year it survived the detention of a minister over the telecoms scandal, country-wide protests over corruption, flip-flopping by fickle regional parties in its coalition, and dismay over a policy paralysis as economic growth was skidding. It even blundered into an embarrassing legal face-off with the country's army chief over his date of birth and retirement.

The question now is whether it can ride out 2012 too.

"BETS ARE ON"

Two looming events could decide that: the first is a month-long election in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh that gets under way this week, and the second is the budget session of parliament in March.

"Ever since the (telecoms) scandal blew sky high in October 2010 ... the regime in Delhi has acquired the traits of a rubber band that stretches and shows great elasticity but is yet to snap," the current affairs weekly Outlook said in a cover story.

"Everyone's waiting and bets are now on as to whether this government will survive the budget session," it said. "The Manmohan regime may be too much of a liability for regional parties (in the coalition) to carry the burden for much longer."

Congress is expected to fare better in the Uttar Pradesh poll than last time, when it won a mere 22 of the state assembly's 403 seats, in part thanks to the tireless campaigning of Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has ruled India for most of its six decades of independence.

But if there is only a modest improvement in its seat tally, Congress will be further weakened.

This may encourage the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to go on the offensive. Coalition partners that Congress relies on for a parliamentary majority could also be tempted to desert it during the budget session in March.

If the government fails to win enough support in parliament for its 2012/13 Finance Bill in mid-March, then, under the constitution, it must resign, which could trigger a mid-term election.

"How many members of parliament want an election now? There's no mood for it. The BJP doesn't want one because they are not sure that they can come to power," said one political insider, who asked not to be named. "But accidents can happen."

One coalition partner that could be tempted by an early election is Mamata Banerjee, a firebrand who leads the Trinamool Congress party. Congress relies on the 19 parliament seats that Banerjee's West Bengal-based party brings to the ruling coalition, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), but at times Banerjee has seemed to be its fiercest opponent and there is a risk that she could pull her support from the government.

If that were to happen, Congress may turn to the Samajwadi Party, which is expected to emerge first or second in the Uttar Pradesh election, to join and rescue its coalition.

Many in Congress see 41-year-old Rahul Gandhi as the answer to the party's troubles. If he delivers a strong result in the Uttar Pradesh election, pressure could mount on him to take the reins of the party sooner than his current long-game plan.

"If Congress does remarkably well in Uttar Pradesh, if he can claim there's a Rahul wave, many would say that this is one way of liberating themselves from this (telecoms) controversy," the insider said. "The argument would be: here's a young man bringing votes back to the party and now it's time to give the younger generation a chance."
