WMS ? What Ever It Is

WMS can stand for a lot of things, but for the purpose of this article I shall say in this case WMS stands for web map service. You may have used a WMS previous without even knowing about it either through your smart phone or just through a web browser on a domestic home computer. A WMS is effectively a digital geographical referencing device or application, the most common of which can be found inside a major search engine and technology company. The purpose behind a WMS would be to make it easier to search for locations, and to eliminate the need for convention paper maps that are constantly getting outdated. Instead of reissuing the map each year to conform to road or geographical changes, a WMS can simply be updated to reflect the new data for no cost. Most WMS applications are free for us and are generally used quite a lot in regards to planning trips and whatnot. Other uses of a WMS could move into the realms of surveillance, as some WMS applications use satellites to get a view of the Earth below, in many cases this has caused controversy for some countries due to assuming either a Government or company is spying on them with their WMS equipment.

For the most part WMS systems and WMS development is very benign and is a by-product of conventional satellite surveillance technology being made available to companies and other organisations. The advent of the WMS is a cause of paranoia for some, as the general assumption goes that WMS systems that are able to broadcast your location are also capable of tracking you in general wherever you take a WMS enabled system. Of course the WMS system can be left behind but the more paranoid believe that some WMS enabled chips or technology can be implanted into items of clothing, personal items, or the body without you directly knowing about it. This is paranoia and paranoia alone, WMS devices are very much only used for domestic use when you need direction assistance without having to buy a map and really nothing more.

Archos' ICS-loaded 97 Carbon tablet now up for sale, priced at $230 for a limited time

Archos' ICS-loaded 97 Carbon tablet now up for sale, priced at $230 for a limited time

Its brief, mandatory appearance at the FCC a couple of weeks ago certainly let us know it'd be ready to take anyone's cash sooner rather than later, and surely enough, the 97 Carbon's now making itself available to all. Just as we'd heard, Archos is pricing the Ice Cream Sandwich slate at $250, though the company's currently running a deal where it's parting ways with the Elements slab for $20 less than MSRP -- naturally, this is a "limited time only" offer, and thus it could change at any given moment. Either way, that amount of greenbacks snags you an eye-pleasing 9.7-inch, IPS display with a run-of-the-mill 1GHz, single-core CPU and 16GB of built-in storage. Obviously the spotlight's still shining high on Google's Nexus 7, so we're interested to find out how many of you think this is enough to make you look past the Jelly Bean sweets -- do let us know in the comments below.

Sunday Inspiration ? Making A Home And Family

There is something that I look forward to each week that I have been neglecting.? Sundays!? It feels like a sacred day to slow down a little? enjoy the morning? reflect? but I haven?t been doing it (as you can see I haven?t done a Sunday Inspiration in? a month?!).

So I had decided this needed to change!? This mama needs a break from the hustle and bustle of getting the little ones ready (and myself ready and motivated) to get to the barn each morning for chores and milking.? Last night I told J to leave the baby goats with mama because I was taking the morning off.

Here I am while the coffee brews, testing out the waters of taking a morning ?off.?? You know what?? The world is still going on without me.? I am sure the goats are out on pasture, the chickens are already roaming outside, and I?m watching a wild rabbit hopping along the drive way.

What do you have planned for YOU today?

Here are some inspirational links from the week::

Have a fantabulous Sunday, everyone! <3

IPhone appeal dims as Samsung shines

NEW YORK (AP) -- The latest iPhone looks much the same as the first iPhone, which came out more than five years ago. That hasn't been a problem for Apple - until, now.

The pace of iPhone sales has slowed, Apple revealed last week. Part of the problem is that the competition has found a formula that works: thinner phones with big screens that make the iPhone look small and chubby.

For a dose of smartphone envy, iPhone owners need to look no further than Samsung Electronics Co., the number-one maker of smartphones in the world. Its newest flagship phone, the Galaxy S III, is sleek and wafer-thin.

By comparison, the iPhone "is getting a bit long in the tooth," says Ramon Llamas, an analyst with research firm IDC.

Apple has become the world's most valuable company on the back of the iPhone, which makes up nearly half of its revenue. IPhone sales are still growing, but the question of how fast they're growing is of keen interest to investors. The iPhone certainly has room to grow: only one in six smartphones sold globally in the second quarter had an Apple logo on its back.

When Apple reported financial results for its latest quarter last week, a new phenomenon was revealed: Buyers started pulling back on iPhone purchases just six months after the launch of the latest iPhone model.

Apple executives blamed the tepid sales on "rumors and speculation" that may have caused some consumers to wait for the next iPhone, which is due in the fall. But in the past, iPhone sales have stayed strong nine months after the new model is launched, then dipped as people began holding off, waiting for the new model.

In the April to June period, Apple sold 26 million phones, 28 percent more than it did in the same quarter last year.

Most other phone makers "would kill" for those numbers, says Stephen Baker, an analyst with research firm NPD Group.

The exception is Samsung, which has solidified its position at the world's largest maker of smartphones. Analysts believe it made just over 50 million smartphones in the second quarter, or nearly twice as many as Apple. (The company doesn't release specific figures.) Its smartphone sales have nearly tripled in a year.

Most of Samsung's sales comprise cheaper smartphones that don't compete directly with the iPhone. Its flagship phones, though, have emerged as the iPhone's chief rivals.

Samsung and Apple have a complicated relationship. They're rivals in the smartphone and tablet-computer markets, and are set to square off in a high-profile trial over mobile patents in San Francisco this week. Samsung is one of Apple's largest suppliers of chips and displays, and Apple is one of Samsung's largest clients.

Though Apple is known as a relentless innovator, the iPhone's screen has been the same size - 3.5 inches on the diagonal - since the first iPhone came out. It was a big screen for the time, but among the competition, screen sizes have crept up.

Samsung has increased the screen size of its Galaxy series with every model since it debuted in 2010. The Galaxy S had a screen that measured 4 inches diagonally, and was followed by the S II, at 4.3 inches. The S III, the latest model, measures 4.8 inches. The screen is nearly twice as large as the iPhone's. Yet the Galaxy is thinner and lighter than an iPhone.

Samsung has also achieved surprising success with an even bigger phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note. Its 5.3-inch screen makes it somewhat awkward to hold to the ear, but customers don't seem to mind, or perhaps they value the large screen and included stylus more.

Aside from design, Apple is inflexible in another way: by releasing a new phone only one per year, it lets the competition create new phones with features the iPhone doesn't have and lets them go unchallenged, at least until the new iPhone comes out.

"Apple's schedule leaves the other ten or nine months of the year wide open for everybody else," says Llamas.

For instance, the newest Samsung phones can use the latest high-speed data networks in the U.S., and talk to payment terminals in stores, so they can act as smart "credit cards."

Samsung times its product launches to take maximum advantage of the lull in iPhone sales that usually precedes the launch of a new model. The S III went on sale in Europe in May and in the U.S. in June.

The rest of the competition is in disarray, and hasn't been able to capitalize in the same way on Apple's rigid release schedule and conservative design. Nokia Corp., until recently the world's largest phone maker, is in sharp retreat and is conducting a complete revamp of its smartphones. Research In Motion Ltd. is stuck with outdated software for its BlackBerrys at least until it launches a new operating system next year. HTC Corp. of Taiwan is suffering from marketing missteps in the last few years. LG Electronics, another Korean company, hasn't been able to keep up with Samsung when it comes to high-end phones, or with cheaper manufacturers on the low end.

Together, Samsung and Apple make half of the world's smartphones, and since competitors are losing money or breaking even, account for nearly all of the profits in the industry.

"Samsung is the only company that didn't really buckle under the weight of the iPhone 4S. Good, solid devices and good, solid marketing behind them," Llamas says.

Analysts now expect the new iPhone to arrive in September or October, probably with a slightly bigger screen. Sticking to one screen size has served Apple well, Baker says, but he sees the company moving with the times, as it's done many times before.

"When they have the reputation and the brand loyalty that they have, you don't have to be the first to market" with new features, Baker says. "You don't have to take that risk."

Olympics 'not looking good', admits injured Radcliffe

British veteran Paula Radcliffe admitted on Sunday her participation in the Olympics marathon "was not looking good" as she struggles to overcome a foot injury.

The 38-year-old had had been reported in a newspaper as about to pull out of the Games, but she insisted that she will test the injury one more time before making a decision.

Radcliffe said on Twitter that she was "hurt" by the report "and whoever thinks (they) know my situation, before even do final test run. Not looking good but my heartbreaking news to break!".

Radcliffe has been struggling for fitness since the foot injury flared up three weeks ago and, according to a source close to the athlete cited in The Mail on Sunday, was set to concede defeat in her bid to line up on August 5.

"The time to make a decision has arrived and there's only one decision to make," said the source. "Paula is not fit to run at the moment. There will be an announcement in the next day or two."

Andy Hunt, Great Britain's chef de mission, told reporters Sunday: "Paula Radcliffe is absolutely on the team. We all know she is fighting with injury. She's doing everything possible to be fit. Right now, she's on the team.

"We continue to make sure that we offer as much support as we can to UK Athletics in giving Paula the best chance to get fit and absolutely get to the start line."

He said there was a potential replacement athlete should Radcliffe not be fit in time.

"That's a call that (UK Athletics head coach) Charles van Commenee will make. It's with Charles to think about.

"We want Paula to be fit and give her the opportunity to compete."

Radcliffe has run some of the fastest marathons in history, but wretched luck with injuries and illness have contributed to her failure to win an Olympic medal in an otherwise successful career.

At the 2004 Athens Games, she was forced to stop mid-race and dissolved into tears.

Radcliffe was hampered by injury again four years ago in Beijing when she trailed home in the marathon in 23rd place after a stress fracture had disrupted her training.

Man charged with manslaughter in Florida butt-injection case

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - A man who injected a woman in the buttocks with unknown substances during an illegal cosmetic surgery was arrested on Thursday and charged with manslaughter in the woman's death, authorities said.

Oneal Ron Morris, 31, of Hollywood, Florida, is known to have injected other women with substances such as bathroom caulk, cement, Super Glue and the tire product Fix-A-Flat, officials with the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities described Morris as a transvestite who went by the nickname "The Dutchess."

According to his arrest affidavit, 31-year-old Shatarka Nuby died in March in Tallahassee from what an assistant medical examiner called "massive systemic silicone migration" due to "cosmetic silicone injections of the buttocks and hips," according to the arrest affidavit.

She died months after her last injection by Morris. Before her death, Nuby told a Florida Department of Health investigator that she paid Morris at least $2,000 for about 10 treatments between 2007 and 2011 to enhance her buttocks, hips, thighs and breasts, according to the affidavit and a sheriff's report.

Morris once told Nuby's aunt that he was injecting her with silicone from Home Depot, the affidavit said. Morris made house calls for the injections and would seal the injection sites with cotton balls and Super Glue, Nuby's aunt told investigators.

Neither Morris, who remained in custody in Broward County Jail, nor a representative for him could be reached for comment on Thursday evening. He is awaiting trial on previous charges of practicing medicine without a license and causing injury.

Nuby's death in March occurred at Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institute where, according to CBS Miami, she was serving a 2-1/2 year sentence for identity theft, which she resorted to in order to pay for breast implants and liposuction.

Sony rep confirms some 2011 Xperia handsets won't be tasting Google's Jelly Bean

Some of you might be familiar with Sony's earlier struggles to successfully (and in a timely manner) deliver Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to a slew of Xperia handsets. And, as we all know, Android 4.0's no longer the freshest treat around, thus the Walkman maker will now have to answer all the Jelly Bean questions to come. The first one to do so was a resident Sony mobile expert on the company's UK Facebook page, revealing that the Xperia Arc S and the itty-bitty Xperia Mini Pro won't be receiving the latest and greatest OS from Mountain View. Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an upgrade, no?

World's smallest semiconductor laser created

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Physicists at The University of Texas at Austin, in collaboration with colleagues in Taiwan and China, have developed the world's smallest semiconductor laser, a breakthrough for emerging photonic technology with applications from computing to medicine.

The scientists report their efforts in this week's Science.

Miniaturization of semiconductor lasers is key for the development of faster, smaller and lower energy photon-based technologies, such as ultrafast computer chips; highly sensitive biosensors for detecting, treating and studying disease; and next-generation communication technologies.

Such photonic devices could use nanolasers to generate optical signals and transmit information, and have the potential to replace electronic circuits. But the size and performance of photonic devices have been restricted by what's known as the three-dimensional optical diffraction limit.

"We have developed a nanolaser device that operates well below the 3-D diffraction limit," said Chih-Kang "Ken" Shih, professor of physics at The University of Texas at Austin. "We believe our research could have a large impact on nanoscale technologies."

In the current paper, Shih and his colleagues report the first operation of a continuous-wave, low-threshold laser below the 3-D diffraction limit. When fired, the nanolaser emits a green light. The laser is too small to be visible to the naked eye.

The device is constructed of a gallium nitride nanorod that is partially filled with indium gallium nitride. Both alloys are semiconductors used commonly in LEDs. The nanorod is placed on top of a thin insulating layer of silicon that in turn covers a layer of silver film that is smooth at the atomic level.

It's a material that the Shih lab has been perfecting for more than 15 years. That "atomic smoothness" is key to building photonic devices that don't scatter and lose plasmons, which are waves of electrons that can be used to move large amounts of data.

"Atomically smooth plasmonic structures are highly desirable building blocks for applications with low loss of data," said Shih.

Nanolasers such as this could provide for the development of chips where all processes are contained on the chip, so-called "on-chip" communication systems. This would prevent heat gains and information loss typically associated with electronic devices that pass data between multiple chips.

"Size mismatches between electronics and photonics have been a huge barrier to realize on-chip optical communications and computing systems," said Shangjr Gwo, professor at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwain and a former doctoral student of Shih's.

Same Sex Marriage: What This Writer Thinks ? Family Scholars

Since David?s piece appeared several weeks ago there?s been a lot of discussion and reaction. As he was writing the piece David conversed with many of his friends, including me, so I was not at all surprised when it was published. I respect deeply the way he has engaged this topic over the years, his sincerity, his courage, his doggedness, and his willingness to listen. I respect that the piece he wrote several weeks ago was the result of much careful thought. It was also a beautifully and carefully written piece that bears many re-readings.

In the weeks since his piece appeared, I?ve been thinking about what I think about all this. I decided to wait to write something until someone asked me. Today, a friend of the Institute asked me what I think. So now I?ll write a few words.

I still do not support legalization of same sex marriage. I am skeptical and cautious about redefining marriage in this way, because of the unintended consequences I see for the culture, for how legalizing same sex marriage redefines parenthood and weakens understandings of the importance of mothers and fathers in children?s lives. I will continue to research, write, speak about and mentor younger scholars on this topic. My goal as always is to be careful and compassionate as I do so.

At the same time, I will also continue to give attention to other important marriage debates today that are directly affecting many more children, especially in the broad middle of America. I am referring here to the roughly 60 percent of young adult Americans who have high school but not college degrees, more than half of whom are now having children outside of marriage. I will be researching, writing, speaking about, and mentoring younger scholars on the risks for those children and families and what we as a nation can do to help.

As I have said before, I do support adoption access for gay and lesbian would-be parents and use of second-parent adoption to strengthen these families. I support protections for gays and lesbians not to be discriminated against in child custody decisions after a divorce or breakup. I do recognize that gay and lesbian persons are and will continue to be raising children, and those children and their families need a name and a net for what they are doing. Nobody likes civil unions anymore except for a few alternative hetero couples, but maybe we can figure out a way forward that does not require us to edit the words ?mother? and ?father? out of our law and cultural dialog.

In the meantime, legal gay marriage *is* the reality in a number of states. With that reality comes some responsibility on the part of those who won. For one thing, you now have a legally recognized family form. That means you get to be studied just like everybody else. You can?t cry ?foul? and ?no fair? when social scientists and social critics cast an eye on your family just as they do any other family form. You won a seat at the table. So don?t go stomping off when someone asks you a tough question.

And, while legal gay marriage is not yet the law of America, the gay marriage movement has certainly won the day in framing their cause as one of openness, justice, and civil rights. Young people especially accept that these are the terms of the debate and they are largely on your side. I respect this language and I believe it is sincere. So here, I believe, is another challenge for those who espouse that language: just as openness and justice is of primary importance for those leading the gay marriage movement, so it is of primary importance amid disturbing social practices to which gay and lesbian would-be parents increasingly turn to have their ?own? children. Use of sperm donation, egg donation, and surrogacy all deliberately deny the resulting child knowledge of and daily life with her or her biological father or mother. Sperm donation commodifies men by turning them into products offered on websites. Egg donation and surrogacy commodifies women by turning them into egg banks ripe for harvesting or wombs ready to rent, at real and potentially grave risk to their own health. The gay and lesbian parenting movement can no longer uncritically offer ARTs as one among many ?family building? options without confronting the very troubling class and gender issues rife in use of these technologies.

Finally, I?d like to say something about the Institute for American Values, where I work, where David is founder and president, and where this FamilyScholars blog is based. This Institute has not had in the past, and does not have now, an organizational position on gay marriage. We have had and currently have leaders, staff, board members, and scholars who work with us on projects who take different positions on this question or no position at all. In a very real way, nothing has changed. We are still doing our work, hosting a broad public conversation, moving forward, listening to others, thinking hard. We are still passionate about child well-being, stable families, and the role of marriage as one of our most pro-child social institutions, a thick web crafted over millennia of human experience which at its core seeks to define, bring together, and keep together the parents who made the baby, but which also offers numerous other goods, like dignity, companionship, some kind of social security and more, which it is only human to want. I understand that. I?m listening.

The Sandwich Generation - Blog - FamilyWize

Caught in the Middle

The?Sandwich Generation ? is a growing situation.??It describes a generation of people who find themselves caring for elderly parents or relatives while still raising their own children. ?In a difficult and uncertain economy supporting one's own children is challenging enough. ?Adding the care and expense of an elderly parent or parents can be both heartbreaking and financially challenging. ?It's often easy to lose ourselves in the myriad of people that surround us.

Aging Parents - A Growing Dilemma
The??Pew Research Center?reports:

  • 1 in 8 Americans between the ages of 40 and 60 are adult children?caring for an aging parent?and raising own children. ?
  • Between 7 and 10 million adults care for a parent long distance. ?
According to the?U.S. Census Bureau the number of Americans 65 and older will double by the year 2030, to over 70 million.

Carol Abaya, nationally recognized as an expert in eldercare, breaks down the sandwich generation into three categories:

  1. Those who care for their own children and care or help with their aging parents as well.
  2. Those in "their?50's and 60's caring for elderly parents, their grown children and their grandchildren. Adults in their 30's and 40's who care for their own small children, elderly parents and grandparents."
  3. Any one else involved in elder care.
Living with Elderly Parents

It is often unexpected and can turn your life upside down.

My story: ?After a frantic search for my keys, tripping over my cats to the front door, and already late for work, my phone rings. ?It is my mom's car dealership. "I hope I'm not overstepping anything here, but we just took your mom home." ?My heart is in my throat thinking something terrible has happened. ?Well, yes and no. Mom was not hurt or in an accident. ?However, she took her car over because she thought she had gotten a call that it was due for maintenance. ?The dealership had not called. ?But when she arrived, the agent noticed that she seemed confused and could not get her car to shut off.? Worried that she should not be on the road, they told her they would look the car over for her and change the oil and shuttle her home. ?Then they called me. ?My mother never drove again after that. ?After a few weeks and an escalating issue with her breathing, she was hospitalized for pneumonia. ?During that time, a CAT scan revealed that she had suffered several mini-strokes. ?She was developing Dementia. ?I suddenly found myself sandwiched between my own home in the city, hers in the suburbs, a two-hour drive in traffic, and a job that did not allow employees to call out sick.?

I quickly realized my mom would not be able to live on her own, which meant drastic changes to life as I knew it:

  • I had to rent my house, quit my job, and move in with her.?
  • I also realized that I was going to need a lucrative income without leaving my home. The challenge was to find other, less conventional ways of earning a living from direct sales to consulting and writing.?
  • I also need flexibility for doctor's appointments, my mom's ups and downs and my need to include her in my travels outside the home because she cannot be left alone.?
Elder Care - A Family Affair

Sandwich GenerationThe responsibility of caring for an aging parent or spouse did not single me out. ?Both my aunt and my cousin joined the sandwich generation together. ? On Thanksgiving night about six years ago, my cousin showed up at my house with suitcases in hand and her young son. Normally she showed up with a side dish, this year she brought a family! ?My aunt found herself joining the ranks of the Sandwich Generation when she had to care for her disabled husband, her daughter and grandson. And her daughter raises her young child while sharing in the care of an elderly parent.

Both women work full time jobs and struggle with the demands of their careers. ?Sharing in the daily care of my uncle, they are challenged with navigating the ever-changing Medicare system and his worsening condition. ?Neither of them thought they would be in this situation.

Common Eldercare Situations

  • Recently, my uncle chose to stay late at elder care, without notifying my cousin who needs to take her son to team practice. ?Because she had to wait for her father's bus to help him into the house, her son was late. Dementia has diminished his ability to use a house key to let himself in.
  • I have experienced this with my mother. She knows how to lock a door, and has often locked me out! But unlocking the door is a challenge.? My mother sometimes stands at the window, smiling at me, but doesn't understand that I need her to let me in.? In this situation, it's really important to remember your key at all times!
My cousin and I laugh at the numerous times we've been locked out and our parents don't answer the door.

Elderly Parent's Care
My one friend who is?dealing with elderly parents?has the additional pressure of caring for her aging parents from a distance. ?We often miss the simple things like children or grandchildren's events due to travel, appointments, and?the unpredictability of dealing with an elderly parent. ?Despite the sacrifices,?we consider it a privilege and agree that there is nothing else we'd rather be doing than caring for elderly parents.

As the population ages, and more adult children dealing with aging parents join the sandwich generation, the need for resources that can provide emotional support, financial, medical, and other social services will also grow.? Tomorrow's article, The Sandwich Generation - Tips for Living with Elderly Parents will provide links for resources that can help us build healthy sandwiches, filled with ingredients that aid us to meet the challenges of the most important job we'll ever do.

Loss of tiny liver molecule might lead to liver cancer

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? A new study shows that loss of a small RNA molecule in liver cells might cause liver cancer and that restoring the molecule might slow tumor growth and offer a new way to treat the disease.

The animal study was led by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center -- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC -- James).

The scientists examined what happens when liver cells lack a molecule called microRNA-122 (miR-122). They found that when the molecule is missing, the liver develops fat deposits, inflammation and tumors that resemble hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer.

When the researchers artificially restored miR-122 to nearly normal levels by delivering the miR-122 gene into liver cells, it dramatically reduced the size and number of tumors, with tumors making up 8 percent on average of liver surface area in treated animals versus 40 percent in control animals.

The study is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

"These findings reveal that miR-122 has a critical tumor-suppressor role in the healthy liver, and they highlight the possible therapeutic value of miR-122 replacement for some patients with liver cancer," says study leader Dr. Kalpana Ghoshal, associate professor of pathology and a member of the OSUCCC -- James Experimental Therapeutics Program.

More than 28,700 new cases of HCC are expected in the United States in 2012, and 20,550 Americans are expected to die of the malignancy. Major risk factors for HCC include hepatitis B and C virus infection and liver damage due to alcohol use. HCC is curable if caught early, but most cases are diagnosed at a late, incurable stage.

MiR-122 is found mainly in liver cells -- it is the most abundant microRNA in those cells -- and it plays a major role in regulating cholesterol in the body. This microRNA is lost in some people with HCC, however, resulting in a poor prognosis.

For this study, Ghoshal and her colleagues developed a strain of mice that lacks miR-122 and develops HCC through the progression of events that begins with fatty liver deposits followed by inflammation and liver cancer.

The researchers then used a second strain of mice that spontaneously develops liver cancer due to overexpression of a cancer-causing gene called MYC (pronounced "mick"). The researchers delivered miR-122 into the animals' livers during tumor development. Three weeks later, those treated with the molecule had smaller and fewer tumors.

"The model we developed for these studies will not only facilitate our understanding of liver biology, but it will also be good for testing therapeutic efficacy of newly developed drugs against liver disease, including HCC," Ghoshal says.

Ghoshal also notes that research by others has shown that hepatitis C virus requires miR-122 for replication. "Because our findings demonstrate what happens when miR-122 is lost in liver cells, they might help improve the safety of new drugs that treat hepatitis C virus infection by blocking miR-122," she says.

    92% Safety Not Guaranteed

Question: If you could go back in time, what time would you return to and why? Normally I answer, or vaguely answer, my own questions in these reviews but I?m not going to on this one. I am not an overly nostalgic person unless it has to do with a film or a band. Plus, after seeing Safety Not Guaranteed this past weekend, I learned a valuable lesson. Sorry if this confuses anyone but you will just have to see Safety Not Guaranteed to understand what I am referring to?.or trying to, at least. I have wanted to see this film for a long time. There was just something about the story that drew me to it ? not too long ago I even posted the preview on here; and I save those posts usually for films that I think will be interesting, unique or that tell a story that will move me. This one did, not drastically, but enough to get me out of my writer?s block (fingers crossed) and make me contemplate parts of my life. That?s what I want from most films, art, books, etc?an opportunity to think; notice something you hadn?t before; and look upon an idea with a fresh perspective, etc? Safety Not Guaranteed took on an age-old idea: looking back on your past with regret and hoping you can change things so you wouldn?t be unhappy now. And the filmmakers made a charming, perfectly decent film that will just make you smile. Plus, they added the idea of time travel. Who wouldn?t like that, right? So, I ask again, would you want to go back in time and why? For most, I believe, the reasoning will involve another person: a partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, parent or someone with whom you hurt or they did something that haunts you, still. We all make mistakes. Mistakes are thrust upon us. We fall in love with the wrong person, or the right person, and hearts get broken no matter what. Also, we can be cruel to another. Admit it ? we have ALL been there. We are human. Safety Not Guaranteed represented several aspects of people?s regret and/or searching for the cure to change their current situation. And I think most will be able to relate. Now the next question(s): Could we fix it? Should we fix it? Would we be better off if we changed these brief, few moments of the past? Or are we where we are supposed to be? Thinking about regrets is enough to drive you a little mad. And that?s how the actor in this film, Mark Duplass? character, is portrayed. Someone who must be insane because he puts a classified ad in the paper requesting a partner go back in time with him. He declares it will be dangerous and your safety will not be guaranteed. His ad intrigues a magazine editor ? enough to send a writer and two interns to check the story out. There are a couple other character in this film that display the same sort of desire to change their present by reaching towards the past: The young intern, Darius, played by Aubrey Plaza and her boss, Jeff, played by Jake. M. Johnson. Both these characters represented the vast differences on why someone would want to go back in time. I liked both characters, a lot. In fact, Jeff was one that kept the comedy going in this film. He?s the type of guy you don?t want to like but he evokes sympathy when you aren?t expecting. Darius is a sarcastic girl that has a deep, hidden secret on why she is unhappy now. As for the rest of the story, no more details. Just go see this film. It is slated as a comedy, and it was absolutely funny at parts but it is not slap stick or a joke every few minutes type of film. The humor is subtle and well placed. Safety Not Guaranteed showed real humor, the humor we all have in our lives. The absurdity that is ever present ? that?s what makes it a comedy. However, I would categorize this as a drama as well. And that?s a compliment. Bottom line: Just give me a good story, tell it well and with respect (especially for the audience), and you?ve got a fan in me. Safety Not Guaranteed did all three. Well done! My favorite thing: There might too many things to list here. I just really, really liked this film. Okay, I laughed OUT LOUD when Jeff raises his fists in the air. His reaction to what was happening just kept me smiling and smiling. My least favorite thing: I got nothing this time. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Big Beach Films, 2012 Genre: Comedy Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson, Mark Duplass, Karan Soni, Jeff Garlin and Kristen Bell. Rating: R Length: 86 minutes Review: 9 out of 10

Two-time breast cancer survivor helps raise funds | Cancer Kick

CALGARY ??? When the fear became almost unbearable, Rejeanne Taylor reminded herself that all she could do was put one foot in front of the other.

The two-time breast cancer survivor would walk to help cope with a disease that cruelly invaded her body twice ??? once in 1998 requiring a mastectomy, and again eight years later, when she endured rounds of gruelling chemo therapy and radiation.

???When you???re out there walking, you???re not a cancer patient. You???re a vibrant, capable, physically strong person,??? Taylor told the Herald. ???It was so important for me to have something beyond just the cancer in my life.???

Now cancer-free, Taylor walks to raise money and Sunday she added 40-kilometres to her running tally at the Weekend to End Women???s Cancers.

The annual 60-kilometre walk raised $1.8 million in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, which funnels dollars toward research and cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and clinics across the province.

???It???s cancer. It???s mysterious and unpredictable, and that???s why we have to keep raising money for research. There???s too many children and too many young people that face this journey,??? Taylor said.

One of those young people is 25-year-old Ashley Hart.

A month before her wedding day last July, doctors told Hart that she had breast cancer.

She faces surgery for a double mastectomy on Aug. 7, but Sunday she crossed the finish line with a smile on her face, flanked by family, having walked 60 kilometres to raise more than $13,000.

???I don???t really know how to take it easy. I golfed through my chemo,??? Hart said. ???When you???re the person going through it, you just do what you have to do.???

When she was first diagnosed, Hart admits she felt angry.

???I was confused. At the time I wanted to know why it was happening to me and why it happened at 24,??? she said. ???But I got those answers later.???

Doctors told Hart that she was a carrier of BRCA1 ??? a rare, mutated gene responsible for increasing the risk for breast and ovarian cancers.

???I was more upset for my mom and my husband. My mom wished it was her and not me. That was upsetting.???

Organizers said the Weekend to End Women???s Cancers, the largest fundraiser for women???s cancers in Alberta???s history, has raised $47 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation since its inception.

???This year in Alberta, 1,950 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 270 with gynecological (cancers). Funds raised by The Weekend are put to use immediately, and support cutting-edge research, the development of new therapies and prevention programs for breast, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers,??? said Myka Osinchuk, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Close to a thousand Albertans participated in the two-day trek that ended Sunday.
