Del Ponte joins U.N. war crimes inquiry on Syria

GENEVA (Reuters) - Carla del Ponte, a former U.N. chief prosecutor, was on Friday appointed a member of a United Nations commission investigating war crimes in Syria.

The commission is gathering evidence for possible future trials of individuals and military units suspected of committing abuses in the 18-month-old conflict in which forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are seeking to quell an uprising against him.

Switzerland proposed that del Ponte, a former Swiss attorney-general, become a commissioner and lobbied hard on her behalf, overcoming resistance by some countries that found her too controversial, diplomats said.

Laura Dupuy Lasserre, president of the U.N. Human Rights Council, said she had appointed del Ponte and Vitit Muntarbhorn to the Commission of Inquiry to join Brazilian Paulo Pinheiro and American Karen Abuzayd.

"Both have a long track record which has been recognized at the highest possible level internationally," she told the Council at the end of a three-week session. "Their reputation is of impartial, independent and objective human rights work."

The appointment of such an experienced lawyer as del Ponte suggests the United Nations is determined to try to build a solid criminal case and bring human rights violators to justice.

Del Ponte's eight years at the Hague-based court International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia were dominated by the pursuit and trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, who died in 2006 before sentencing.

"She brings strong investigative skills and an ability to better systematize and use the huge amount of information that the Commission of Inquiry is putting together with a view to prosecution one day," European Union (EU) Ambassador Mariangela Zappia told Reuters.

EXTENDED MANDATE

Peter Splinter, a spokesman for Amnesty International, said: "She will bring valuable knowledge and experience to an already strong commission team."

Muntarbhorn is a veteran expert from Thailand who has served as U.N. special rapporteur on North Korea.

Earlier, the Council extended the mandate of the Syria inquiry by another six months and condemned violations by government forces and pro-Assad militias but also by rebel fighters.

The 47-member forum adopted a resolution by a vote of 41 states in favor, with three states - China, Cuba and Russia - against and three abstentions.

Russia, Syria's ally, voiced concerns about the probe.

"We regret the fact that it has been difficult to achieve official access to Syria, one has to cope with rumors and fabricated data," Russian diplomat Vladimir Zheglov said.

"Therefore, we call upon the commission to act objectively and in a non-politicized way and to use verified facts."

Faysal Khabbaz Hamoui, Syria's ambassador, rejected the text of the resolution submitted by seven Arab states and backed by Western powers as "highly-politicized and selective".

He accused Islamist "terrorists" of fuelling the violence in his country, where activists say 30,000 people have been killed.

The international inquiry led by Pinheiro, set up a year ago, has interviewed more than 1,100 victims, refugees and defectors, documenting massacres including the one at Houla near Homs in May. But it has been denied access to Syria.

Earlier this month, it expanded its secret list of Syrians suspected of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including executions and torture, who it says should face future prosecution.

Logitech promises continued support for Squeezebox, says it won't force a switch to UE Smart Radio

With Logitech's Squeezebox platform having quietly and unexpectedly reached its EOL status, the company found it necessary to let its customers know where they stand going forward. In a very detailed letter from UE product director Ariel Fischer, the Harmony maker reassured current Squeezebox owners it will continue to offer support for these products, adding that the current "mysqueezebox" website and certain apps will still work with existing devices. What's more, those who managed to snag one of those Squeezebox Radios will have the option to upgrade to the outfit's new UE Smart Radio service -- which, according to Logitech, can play nicely alongside existing Squeezebox products, though this "will operate and be controlled separately." All in all, it could be worse -- and, in age where customer service can sometimes be rather unpleasant, we're sure most of us can appreciate the transparency being shown in the open letter. Speaking of which, you'll find that at the source link below.

US aims to rally Syrian opposition with new aid

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Obama administration moved Friday to rally Syria's opposition with pledges of $45 million in new non-lethal and humanitarian assistance as the administration and other world leaders lamented the failure of diplomatic efforts to push Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. would contribute an additional $15 million in non-lethal gear ? mostly communications equipment ? to the civilian opposition trying to oust Assad as well as $30 million in new humanitarian assistance to help those affected by the continuing violence.

She also delivered a new, stark warning to Iran that it must stop arming and supporting the Assad regime.

"It is no secret that our attempts to move forward at the U.N. Security Council have been blocked repeatedly, but the United States is not waiting," Clinton said as she announced the new aid at a gathering of the Friends of Syria group that she hosted at a New York hotel on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. She and other foreign ministers from the group met with nine Syrian opposition figures, including several who traveled from Syria to attend Friday's session, to discuss strategy.

With U.N. action blocked by Russia and China, Clinton said the rest of the world must support the Syrian opposition. She also said it was urgent that the fractured foes of the regime unite around plans for a political transition that could put an end to more than three decades of Assad family rule. Activists say the current 18-month long conflict has led to more than 30,000 deaths.

"Conditions in Syria continue to deteriorate as the Assad regime relentlessly wages war on its own people," Clinton said. "We see more bodies filling hospitals and morgues and we see more refugees fleeing their homeland and flooding into neighboring countries. The regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop and a new dawn can begin."

In Washington, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said new intelligence suggested the Syrian government has moved some of its chemical weapons in order to protect them, even though the U.S. believes that the main sites remain secure.

The new U.S. humanitarian assistance ? which brings America's total humanitarian contribution to more than $130 million since the crisis began ? will include food, water, blankets and medical services to victims of the violence. U.S. officials said on Thursday that an earlier shipment of medical goods provided by USAID had just arrived in southern Syria. The officials would not provide details of how the aid made it into Syrian territory.

The additional non-lethal support brings the total U.S. contribution in that area to nearly $40 million since the crisis began and includes 1,100 sets of communications equipment, including satellite-linked computers, telephones and cameras and training for more than 1,000 activists, students and independent journalists.

"We are working to help them strengthen their networks, avoid regime persecution and document human rights abuses," Clinton said. The U.S. is not providing military aid to the rebels although it acknowledges that other countries are.

Clinton's announcement came as fighting intensified in Syria's largest city, Aleppo, with the most widespread battles reported in three months in the city of 3 million people as rebel forces launched a new offensive against Assad.

Despite some battleground success, there have been complaints that the opposition is hopelessly splintered and unable to coalesce around a transition plan that was adopted by members of the U.N. Security Council in Geneva over the summer. Friday's meeting was intended in part to encourage better cooperation among Assad's foes.

"It is encouraging to see some progress toward greater opposition unity, but we all know there is more work to be done," Clinton said. U.S. officials have noted that revolutionary councils in cities including Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, Idlib and Deir al-Zour were becoming increasingly organized.

Members of local groups from across Syria and representatives of the exile group, the Syrian National Council ? including its head, Abdulbaset Sieda ? attended the meeting. But U.S. officials declined to name others taking part or let them be photographed, saying that doing so would risk putting those opponents of Assad in danger of reprisals.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Arab League. League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby lamented the U.N.'s inability to demand that the Geneva plan be implemented by threatening sanctions against those who would not abide by it.

"All of our efforts up to now have led to failures," he said. "We have not managed to change the situation."

Neither Russia nor China, which have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, were invited to Friday's meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ? who was to address the General Assembly on Friday ? has accused the U.S. and other countries of encouraging terrorism in their stance on Syria.

However, Clinton told the meeting that the greatest threat to Syria, other than the Assad regime itself was Iran.

"Let's be very frank here," she said. "The regime's most important lifeline is Iran."

"There is no longer any doubt that Tehran will do whatever it takes to protect its proxy and crony in Damascus. Iran will do everything it can to evade international sanctions," Clinton said. She urged Syria's neighbors to take extra steps to ensure that Iran is not smuggling weapons and materiel into Syria through their airspace or territory.

Mad Women: Understanding Betty's Thyroid Issues | Grass Fed Girl

I am major fan of Mad Men and I was intrigued when Betty had a thyroid lump in Episode 3 of Season 5. Betty is Don?s ex -wife who has gained some major pounds since season 4 and it is revealed that she has thyroid problem. I want to discuss some of the? factors that may be contributing to her condition based on the show and my experience with thyroid issues. Some of Betty?s lifestyle factors are a perfect storm for thyroid dysfunction and many doctors ignore these influences.

She actually found out she had a thyroid tumor after visiting the doctor for a diet pill prescription. At first they suspected that she had cancer but it was later found to be benign. Betty definitely had an inflamed and swollen thyroid which is commonly caused by Hashimoto?s thyroiditis. It is estimated that 35% of people with thyroid cancer also have Hashimoto?s but many people are unaware that they have the condition because most doctors do not address the autoimmune component of thyroid disease. Western practitioners often do not order the proper tests for thyroid antibodies. Most people with low thyroid, up to 90%, actually have Hashimoto?s thyroiditis where the body is attacking it?s own tissue by mistake.

Some Important Factors Contributing to Betty?s Thyroid Issues:

Stress: Betty had some major trauma leading up to Season 5 including the revelation that Don was cheating on her for years. She? dismantled her family and moved them into a large ominous house with a new father figure. Going through a major life change can be so stressful that it can spark thyroid irregularities. Stressful events in life increase cortisol production which weakens the GI tract setting the stage for leaky gut and autoimmune dysfunction.

Processed Food: In the 1950?s many women cooked at home like we saw on The Donna Reed Show, making meat loafs and pot roasts but in the 1960?s the trend was to embrace convenience foods. The scene in this episode where Betty is chomping on some Bugles, which were first introduced in 1966, tells us a lot about the era and her habits. High carbohydrate snacks like chips and cookies are often filled with rancid oxidized vegetable oils and hard to digest gluten/ grains which both increase intestinal permeability, setting the stage for Hashimoto?s. When someone has an inflamed and porous gut lining it can stimulate a thyroid autoimmune (self) attack.

Blood Sugar Balance: We often see Betty restricting her food on the show to lose weight. The problem is that low fat and low calorie diets usually lead to high carbohydrate consumption which produces blood sugar fluctuations. These highs and lows are very harmful for the adrenals and thyroid function because cortisol is over produced. People in the 1960?s started to abandon traditional foods like bacon and eggs in favor of cereal, pop tarts, and biscuit mixes. These sugary foods spike blood glucose which drag down hypothalamic signaling for proper thyroid and adrenal function. Protein and fat combined at meals are crucial to keep insulin in a healthy range which supports a healthy thyroid.

Yo- Yo dieting: In season 5 Betty visits Weight Watchers numerous times, commonly skipping meals and often expresses how hungry she feels.? Betty is a former model who may have used diet pills or laxatives for many years and that behavior can catch up eventually. When someone is overweight, fatigued and depressed like Betty, it is often an adrenal fatigue issue as well as a thyroid problem. Adrenal hormones assist in the conversion of T-4 to active T-3? which help with weight regulation and energy production. Excessive dieting will cause adrenal burnout inhibiting thyroid hormone production. Many people don?t worry about how yo-yo dieting affects their long term health until it is too late and their thyroid and metabolism is damaged.

Betty Pre-Thyroditis

Lack of Healthy Fats:? If you notice in the end of the episode Betty finishes her daughters ice cream sundae once Sally leaves the room. This behavior is innate because when we starve ourselves of saturated fat the cravings will be so strong that well will give in sooner or later. Our brain must have animal fat to function properly so the signals to binge are out of our control if we are not getting enough. It is much healthier to eat rich meats and fat like ghee or coconut oil than down a carton of sugar laden ice cream. We also need saturated fat from animals and coconut for healthy thyroid functioning because our hormones are made from cholesterol.

Toxins: More chemicals and plastics were introduced during the 1960?s which can negatively affect thyroid function. Cleaning products and beauty care items are full of hormone disruptors called xeno-estrogens. The use of these beauty and home care products have only increased since Betty Draper?s heyday. Betty also smokes which increases storage of heavy metals like cadmium that can slow down liver function and active thyroid hormone conversion. In the show there is copious amounts of alcohol which can also cause hypoglycemic reactions adding to thyroid/adrenal stress and leaky gut. Liver function is very important for clearing toxins but when the thyroid slows liver detox pathways become clogged.

Gluten and other grains: The immune system is always on guard against potential threats and it has an amazing memory for invaders like gluten and other grains. The problem starts when undigested food gets into the blood stream and creates havoc in the body. It is estimated that 80-90% of hypothyroidism is caused by an autoimmune reaction where the body attacks its own gland after the gut becomes porous, which leaks undigested food particles into the bloodstream. Gluten proteins resemble thyroid tissue so the immune system becomes overactive every time we ingest gluten containing grains. Another problem is that molecules of wheat and other grains are so similar that the immune system can not tell the difference. All grains may cause a cross reaction according to many thyroid experts. In Betty?s case she eats gluten all day long which is keeping her immune system on high alert and it is over active, attacking it?s own thyroid tissue. Learn more about how to be grain free here.

Soy: Okay, this was probably not a factor for Betty?s, because at that time soy had a negative reputation as food for communist or vagabond hippies. But soy can be a major player because it has tons of lectins and phytates that block important minerals from being absorbed like selenium and zinc for a healthy thyroid. Soy is full of goitrogens which can also suppress thyroid hormone production. Soy is very hard for the body to break down so it adds to leaky gut syndrome and increase inflammatory response of the body against it?s own precious thyroid. Many people make the mistake of using soy as a vegetarian protein substitute but they do not realize until it is too late that is can ruin thyroid function. Read more about soy dangers here.

Depression: Betty has been to therapy several times for her bizarre behavior (like crashing the car into a mailbox on purpose), mood swings and depression. Low thyroid function can make many people feel like they have low energy which can make people feel depressed. Many experts agree that there is major link between the gut dysfunction and mood/behavior. The feel good neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine are made in the gut but when it is inflamed from attempting to digest nutrient poor food there will be less of these important chemicals produced. When the gut heals through an elimination diet people usually feel less depressed pretty quickly. Removing dietary stressors like grains, inflammatory vegetable oils and soy will help the thyroid and adrenals heal themselves which will give people more energy and boost mood.

Constipation: Constipation is very common symptom of lowered thyroid function. Betty seems very stuck in her life and seems to be unable to release old pain. According to Louise Hay?s book You Can Heal Your Life, constipation is caused by refusing to release old ideas and being stuck in the past. One factor with constipation is that a lack of thyroid hormone slows intestinal motility and transit time. Another issue is that when people are not having regular bowel movements hormones like estrogen will be reabsorbed increasing risk for breast cancer.

Grass Fed Girl?s Commentary on Betty?s Condition:

Things have not changed much in conventional treatment of thyroid problems and just like the 1960?s there is much to be desired in Betty?s care plan. She is sent home literally and figuratively with a band aid on her neck. She is told she does not have cancer and just to go on with normal life. Just like now, most conventional doctors do not see the connection between stress, nutrition, environmental factors and thyroid function. Most treatment protocols do not recognize the importance of healing the immune system (linings of the gut, lungs and brain) to slow the bodies attack on the thyroid.

If you suspect you have low thyroid seek out care from a practitioner who understands that there is more to the problem than TSH tests and synthroid (t-4 only replacements). If you have a? low thyroid it is important to sleep well, manage stress, follow a grain free diet, and get some holistic care from an integrative doctor. It is also important to get tested for thyroid antibodies to figure out if you have autoimmune condition.

What to do in current stock market conditions? And/or When do I cut ...

I have only recently started investing in the stock market thinking it was a pretty good time to since the stocks I liked were down. I went and bought them thinking that the market would come around and not panic and go back on course to fundamentals. With most of my picks getting hammered, like the FMD i bought at $39 and $35 now only $26, or TZOO I bought at $21 now only $15, should I sell and cut my losses? But I know that these are real good companies with strong businesses making me want to buy more of these stocks actually, unless they keep falling..

I?m a college student/entrepreneur from the Philippines looking to grow my moneyand thought of trying the stock market because I?ve read in so many books and articles that if I start now, I could take advantage of the power of compounding, so I did.:) Also being a lone investor here in Philippines, I don?t have anyone to consult with or ask advice from. And I?m not convinced enough yet to invest in local public companies. Thank you!

Tiny medical electronics dissolve harmlessly inside your body

12 hrs.

A team of researchers has created a form of electronics that can be implanted in a patient's body then forgotten about ? because the implants will dissolve within a week or two. Such safe and hassle-free electronic monitoring could revolutionize medical care.

Implanting devices in the body is nothing new, but usually the risk is only worth it for life-threatening problems: a pacemaker, for instance, or an insulin pump. But there are lots of?situations where constantly monitoring some vital statistic would be useful. A thermometer or blood sugar monitor could help make sure a post-operative patient is safe during the critical first week ? but the stress and cost of the implantation and removal operations can't be justified.

But what if the implant was inexpensive and made of nontoxic materials that would break apart and be resorbed into the body after a set period of time? That's just what researchers, led by Professor?Fiorenzo Omenetto at Tufts and?John A. Rogers at the University of Illinois, have accomplished.

The tiny devices, which they call "transient electronics," are made from silicon and silk. Silicon is, of course, a?normal material for electronics, but it is also a common organic element found in our own bodies, and small amounts of silicon are easily dissolved in water or bodily fluids. Modern manufacturing techniques allowed the team to make silicon circuits only tens of nanometers thick, meaning they are well within healthy quantities?to be ingested.

Circuits are usually mounted on plastic or some other non-soluble material. But on transient electronics, the circuit?board is made of silk protein extracted from silkworm cocoons, a material that is strong but also very biodegradable. Omenetto and his team managed to adjust its properties so they can control how long it takes for the silk to degrade ? meaning they can create devices that melt down after a day, a week, or more. Theoretically,?it could last for years,?Rogers told NBC News via email,?but the design the team has been working on was made for the two-week post-operative period.

They use wireless power ? harvesting energy from radio transmissions to operate?the circuits. Rogers said that they can do non-rechargeable batteries, too, but that work isn't published yet.

So far, they've put together a temperature monitor and a tiny camera, both of which could be used for a number of purposes in the medical establishment. The next step, aside from applying for the usual testing and approvals, is to make the devices responsive to things like light or pressure, so that they could be activated or perhaps even destroyed at the command of a doctor or patient.

Beyond the body, such biodegradable devices could also safely be introduced to natural environments without the need to recover them, and without the risk of polluting or poisoning local wildlife.

The research was made possible by a number of grants from DARPA, the NSF, the NIH, and others. The paper is entitled "A physically transient form of silicon electronics," and can be found in this week's edition of the journal Science.

Devin Coldewey is a?contributing writer for NBC News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

Group claims Da Vinci painted early Mona Lisa work

GENEVA (AP) ? A Zurich-based foundation says it will prove to the world Thursday that Leonardo Da Vinci painted an earlier version of the Mona Lisa ? a claim doubted by at least one expert on the multifaceted Renaissance artist.

The Mona Lisa Foundation, which has been working with the anonymous owners of the "Isleworth Mona Lisa," says that after 35 years of research, experts believe it predates the famed 16th-century masterpiece by some 11 or 12 years based on regression tests, mathematical comparisons and historical and archival records.

"So far, not one scientific test has been able to disprove that the painting is by Leonardo," said art historian Stanley Feldman, a foundation member and principal author of a foundation book entitled "Mona Lisa: Leonardo's Earlier Version" to be released Thursday. "We have used methods that were not available to Leonardo 500 years ago."

"When we do a very elementary mathematical test, we have discovered that all of the elements of the two bodies ? the two people, the two sitters ? are in exactly the same place," Feldman told The Associated Press by phone. "It strikes us that in order for that to be so accurate, so meticulously exact, only the person who did one did the other ... It's an extraordinary revelation in itself, and we think it's valid."

The Isleworth painting ? likewise a portrait of a young woman with an enigmatic smile ? is slightly larger, was painted on canvas and has brighter colors than the famed Louvre Museum masterpiece painted on wood. The posture, folded hand positions, faces, expressions and clothing are similar, while the landscape in the background is different.

The foundation says the painting turned up in the home of an English nobleman in the late 1800s ? thus the connection to Isleworth ? and was shipped to the United States for safekeeping during World War I. After the war, it was analyzed in Italy, and eventually taken to Switzerland where it remained in a bank vault for the last 40 years, the group said.

The Isleworth Mona Lisa has been known publicly for generations ? if forgotten by the broader public ? and the book excerpts numerous news headlines about the painting and the possibility of its Da Vinci connection in the early 20th century.

Martin Kemp, an Oxford University professor and Leonardo expert, wrote in an e-mail that "the reliable primary evidence provides no basis for thinking that there was 'an earlier' portrait of Lisa del Giocondo" ? referring to the subject of the painting that's known as the Mona Lisa in English and La Joconde in French.

Kemp questioned the "debatable interpretations" of source material about the Isleworth painting, and said that scientific analysis cannot categorically deny that Da Vinci didn't paint it. However, he added: "The infrared reflectography and X-ray points very strongly to its not being by Leonardo."

"The Isleworth Mona Lisa miss-translates subtle details of the original, including the sitter's veil, her hair, the translucent layer of her dress, the structure of the hands ... " Kemp wrote. "The landscape is devoid of atmospheric subtlety. The head, like all other copies, does not capture the profound elusiveness of the original."

The Louvre Museum declined to comment.

Poet Helena Mesa to read from debut collection at APSU on October ...

?

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN ? In the spring of 2006, Austin Peay State University?s literary journal, Zone 3, published the poem, ?Sway This Night,? by Pittsburgh native Helena Mesa. That work is now part of Mesa?s acclaimed new collection, ?Horse Dance Underwater,? which former Maryland Poet Laureate Michael Collier called a ?virtuosic first book? that leaves readers ?breathless, exhilarated and transformed.?

At 4:00pm on October 11th, Mesa will deliver a reading of her work at the APSU Honors Commons as part of the University?s Fall Visiting Writer?s Series. A book signing will follow the event, which is free and open to the public.

Mesa, the daughter of Cuban parents, grew up in Pittsburgh but later earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maryland. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Houston, and her poems have appeared in major literary journals, such as Third Coast, Indiana Review, Barrow Street and Poet Lore.

?Mesa?s poems are artfully suspended between lyric and narrative, between humans and animals, between Latin America and the U.S., between desire and the difficult of its fulfillment,? Guggenheim fellow and National Book Award-winning poet Mark Doty said. ??Horse Dance Underwater? is an inventive, musical and powerful debut.?

Bizarre tumor case may lead to custom cancer care

This 2008 picture provided by Georgetown University shows Richard Schlegel, M.D., Ph.D., left, and research associate Aleksandra Dakic, Ph.D., in his laboratory at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington. A discovery allows doctors to grow "mini tumors" from each patient's cancer in a lab dish, then test various drugs or combinations on them to see which works best. Although the approach needs much more testing, researchers think it could offer a cheap, simple way to personalize treatment without having to analyze each patient's genes. "We see a lot of potential for it," said Schlegel, one of the study leaders. "Almost everyone could do it easily." (AP Photo/Georgetown University)

It's a medical nightmare: a 24-year-old man endures 350 surgeries since childhood to remove growths that keep coming back in his throat and have spread to his lungs, threatening his life. Now doctors have found a way to help him by way of a scientific coup that holds promise for millions of cancer patients.

The bizarre case is the first use in a patient of a new discovery: how to keep ordinary and cancerous cells alive indefinitely in the lab.

The discovery allows doctors to grow "mini tumors" from each patient's cancer in a lab dish, then test various drugs or combinations on them to see which works best. It takes only a few cells from a biopsy and less than two weeks to do, with materials and methods common in most hospitals.

Although the approach needs much more testing against many different types of cancer, researchers think it could offer a cheap, simple way to personalize treatment without having to analyze each patient's genes.

"We see a lot of potential for it," said one study leader, Dr. Richard Schlegel, pathology chief at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington. "Almost everyone could do it easily."

An independent expert agreed.

For infections, it's routine to grow bacteria from a patient in lab dishes to see which antibiotics work best, Dr. George Q. Daley of Children's Hospital Boston and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute said in an email. "But this has never been possible with cancer cells because they don't easily grow in culture," he said.

The new technique may reveal in advance whether a person would be helped by a specific chemotherapy, without risking side effects and lost time if the drug doesn't work. "Pretty nifty," Daley wrote.

In the case of the 24-year-old, described in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, lab-dish tests suggested that a drug used to treat a type of blood cancer and some other unrelated conditions might help.

It's not a drug that doctors would have thought to try, because the man technically does not have cancer. But his lung tumor shrank after a few months of treatment, and he has been stable for more than a year. He still has to have operations to remove throat growths that keep coming back, but only about once every five months.

The man, an information technology specialist in suburban Washington who asked to remain anonymous to protect his privacy, has recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, or RRP. It's usually due to infection at birth with certain types of a virus, HPV, that causes genital warts.

The condition causes wartlike growths in the throat, usually around the voice box. These growths usually are noncancerous but can turn malignant, and even benign ones can prove fatal if they spread to the lungs. The main treatment is surgery, usually with lasers to vaporize the growths and keep them from choking off the airway or making it hard to talk.

About 10,000 or more people in the U.S. have the disease, said Jennifer Woo, president of the RRP Foundation. Woo, 29, is a medical student at Georgetown and one of the researchers on the study. She also has the condition but said it is confined to her throat and has required only about 20 surgeries so far.

The man in the study has a much more serious case.

"I was diagnosed when I was 3 or 4. At first, I had to have surgery every 7 to 10 days," the man said in a phone interview. "I get short of breath and my voice will get more hoarse."

Two years ago, the growths to his lungs became extensive and life-threatening, and his physician, Dr. Scott Myers, described the condition at a meeting of Georgetown hospital specialists. "It's crushing the airway," Myers said.

Doctors suggested that the new lab method pioneered by Schlegel and others might help. It borrows an idea from stem cell researchers: adding mouse cells for nourishment, plus a chemical that prevents cell death to an ordinary lab culture medium. That enabled healthy and cancerous cells to keep growing indefinitely.

Researchers grew "mini tumors" from the man's lung mass and from healthy tissue and screened various drugs against them. One proved ineffective. Another worked against the tumor but at too high a dose to be safe. The third did the trick.

A similar approach could let doctors screen drugs for cancer patients.

"What could be more personalized than taking this person's cell, growing it in culture, finding a drug to treat them and then treat them?" said Doug Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. The Georgetown method gives an answer quickly enough that it could save lives, he said.

Tyler Jacks, a cancer researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former president of the American Association for Cancer Research, said the next step is to show that this could work for many different cancers and that it leads to better outcomes in patients.

"It seems to have worked in this one instance, but other tumors might prove to be more challenging," he said.

The National Institutes of Health paid for much of this work and has already sent research teams to Georgetown to learn the method. About a dozen other universities have done the same, Schlegel said.

So far, his lab has grown prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer cells.

Georgetown University is seeking a patent on the method.

(AP) ? Dusty Baker won't manage the Cincinnati Reds until the final series in St. Louis, giving him time to recover from an irregular heartbeat that left him hospitalized last week.

Baker met with owner Bob Castellini and his team on Tuesday before a game against the Brewers. Bench coach Chris Speier said he'll manage the final three home games against Milwaukee and three in Pittsburgh over the weekend, with Baker taking over for the last three games next week.

The 63-year-old manager was hospitalized in Chicago last Wednesday for an irregular heartbeat, a problem he's had for a while. He was in the hospital for four days, missing the Reds' 6-0 win over the Dodgers on Saturday night that clinched the NL Central title.

Ever Wonder What Happens to The Drive's Banners When They ...

Commercial Drive Real Estate Vancouver

If you own real estate around Commercial Drive, you are no doubt familiar with the colourful street banners that hang gracefully all year long.

The Commercial Drive Business Society prints about 300 32? x 60? nylon street banners which help create a festive, colourful atmosphere for this unique shopping neighbourhood.

Eventually each edition of these unique designs must be retired, so rather than sending them to the landfill they?ve come up with a very green idea ? transform them into reusable nylon shopping bags and umbrellas!

As of December, 2011, converting our old banners into reusable nylon shopping bags and umbrellas rather than using new fabric, we have:

Avoided 28,607 pounds or 14.3 tons of CO2 emissions
Avoided sending 336 kg (805 lb) of nylon to the landfill
Saved 72,790,080 BTUs of energy ? enough to provide electricity to an average Vancouver home for over 2.5 years
Freed up 1,552 trees to capture and store CO2 from other sources for a full year

When the most recent edition of bags is sold out, we will have over $14,000 in our green space fund. The latest edition of bags was produced by the Kettle Friendship Society ? a neighbourhood non-profit society that provides employment opportunities for people living with mental illness.

?This green initiative even goes one step further?, explains Ian McSorley, marketing chair for Commercial Drive. ?ALL proceeds from the sale of these shopping bags & umbrellas will be donated to the development of new green spaces in the neighbourhood.?

You can find all the information about how to order your umbrella or bag here.

If you?d like more information about buying and selling real estate around Commercial Drive, please contact Vancouver Realtor Justin Leigh.

A Dog Named Indie ? Gabby Schulz | Bleeding Cool Comic Book ...

Louie Falcetti writes;

Hello and welcome to what can be tentatively called a weekly (but confidently called a bi-weekly) (let?s just say regular) indie comics spotlight column, where I?ll be checking out books from the world of independent, small press and DIY comics and talking with their creators. I?m going to bring to you a world that I was totally unaware of until just the last year or so and I know that?s not a rarity, to spend most of your grown up comic book reading life never seeing beyond the capes and the cowls. Not that I won?t be talking about capes and cowls comics here, just the ones that probably won?t get optioned by FOX anytime soon (though maybe Michael Bay might be interested in Pizza Boy?)

For my first column I chose Ignatz Award winning creator Gabby Schulz (also known as Ken Dahl). Monsters was the book that nabbed him the award and if you were writing an autobiographical comic about herpes you might use a different name too. If you?ve spent any of your time tumblin? you?ve probably read him and not even realized it if you?ve seen this in your internet travels. I myself had never heard of him until a week before this year?s SPX a friend of mine lent me Monsters which kept me up real late with it?s honest, inventive story and beautiful pencils.

Then at SPX I ran into Gabby, just as randomly as I had come across his work days earlier and I was able to pick up his latest, Weather, published by Secret Acres. Weather features a protagonist that those who have followed Gabby?s webcomics will be familiar with, Gordon Smalls, who now finds himself on airplane from hell as the most basic of bodily function is not only thwarted but every possible attempt at release is as well. Like Gabby?s other work Weather is not just what it looks or sounds like from a casual glance. It?s not a Seinfeld routine about how difficult everything on the airplane is and what?s the deal with that first class curtain? Schulz takes a familiar setting and a relatable scenario and uses them explore everything about the now (both his and ours) that?s wrong, from the way we treat each other, to the way we treat ourselves. However it?s not just a laundry list of complaints or a depressive ode to one?s navel, it has genuine moments of comedy born out of hard truths and ugly people. It also has genuine moments of beauty thanks to Schulz bringing watercolors into his work, like Dylan going electric (but without the snotty catcalls of enraged folk loving fascists) something that was already good becomes really great.

In the world of Weather, like the world of Tom Goes To The Mayor, there are no beautiful people. Everyone is a gross collection of body parts and misunderstanding. Gordon isn?t so bad on the outside, but what?s inside him is. Literally. The art in the book shifts with the tone, so when it?s the unforgiving mugs of his fellow passengers, the attention to detail renders characters that would be at home on the pages of Crumb, or when Gordon is desperately trying to flush his underwear the art shifts again but to resemble a more comic sense of style not unlike a Sunday Funnies page from hell.

Weather is a perfect example of why indie comics are so important and so worthy of our attention. When you leave the world of on-going titles and corporate trademarks you get to experience something that has become almost totally foreign in the work of the Big Two, honesty. And when a book is just a self contained piece of an artist, an expression that states its? case and leaves but lingers in your mind, the difference between the two worlds is impossible to miss. And impossible not to celebrate, which is why I?m here with you and Gabby Schulz.

First off, how are you enjoying Ohio versus New York?

Ohio has been a great change from Brooklyn, where living meant misery & poverty. I had a pretty good job & pretty cheap rent, but I just couldn?t take the Bloomberg lifestyle. Everything wrong with America today (wealth gap, ecocide, head-up-ass self-absorption, spectacle-empty [over consumption] & rampant [over stimulation], race war, bald 1%er hedonism, naked catfood-eating poverty, the transformation of police into an extralegal paramilitary ultraviolent racist army for the rich, worship of glamor & youth & gadgets, vacuous gentrification, etc) is magnified tenfold by that city, so it was a hard place to be broke, old & introverted. I had my fun there for a bit & enjoyed my cake-delivery gig, but I just couldn?t take the horror. All I really want out of life is cheap rent & cheap beer, & as long as I?m stuck in the continental US, Columbus is pretty decent. (Don?t tell the Billyburg/Greenpoint kids though!)

Can starfish really turn your insides to jelly?

Ha not really. I guess the worst is the crown-of-thorns starfish & that?s just nausea and tissue swelling.

I need to say that when I got back to my hotel room after the show and I saw the name ?Gabby Schulz? on the cover my blood went cold. All I could think was that I had gotten confused and maybe you were just trying to be nice by not correcting me. I googled your name peering between my fingers I was afraid to look at the screen, thinking that I had totally made an ass out of myself. You go by two names (at least), and reading about your life, it sounds like you?ve always existed in between cultures/identities. In ?Sick? the protagonist shuffles through costumes that always leave him tattered and torn. Has comic creating helped you come closer to figuring out your actual identity? Does the work exacerbate identity issues or help sift through the pieces?

I guess the fake name helped draw a semi-autobiographical book about herpes. It helps draw comics in general when they?re detached from your real self, especially now with the internet and all. In fact even with the fake names, I?ll still be amazed if I?m ever able to get a real job again. Also getting a little distance from people when I?m drawing comics is good because in person I?m a polite & accommodating milquetoast and a little anonymity helps slough that off. (Sorry for the confusion though)

Is ?Gordon Smalls? a straight stand in for you or is he your essence turned up to 11?

He?s what I?m terrified of becoming in about 12 years IF I had any mathematical ability whatsoever. He actually is based on a guy who used to come to Copwatch meetings when I lived in Arizona. There?s dudes like that in every city though, and they?re always riding a bike and usually had some sort of engineering-related career at some point. My heart goes out to them.

In ?Gordon Smalls Endures The Wasteland?, Gordon seems to be seeking peace, or at least a real alternative to the society that (rightfully) disgusts and irritates him so, (irritates seems to be almost too light of a word), but upon receiving a light hearted(ish) verbal jibe from the two men he meets in the woods, he immediately retreats. He?s a man who can?t get comfortable. Do you think that?s from within or without? Is there anyplace that Gordon could feel ok in, or is it just something within him that prevents him from being ok in his surroundings?

Well, the without informs the within, so I?m sure it?s both. That comic in particular is especially close to home for me, since I was born & raised in Hawai?i from non-Hawaiian parents and then left. I really think there is nowhere ?Gordon? could feel ok in, but isn?t that sort of the theme of America in general too? I think if you?re at all conscious of the history of this genociding, slave-founded, global-warring country, by now if you?re white & not at least a little uncomfortable you?re either an idiot or a monster.

Speaking of being comfortable, the situation in?Weather?, starts with Gordon seeking comfort (of sorts), at least release. Both in ?Weather? and ?Sick? the protagonists can only escape their body inflicted misery by dreams of suicide. Though in ?Weather? it seems to be less of a dour, capitulation and more of an escape. Why do you keep coming back to these themes? Is there only two options when confronted with the horror of modern living, eternal escape or living in misery?

I think it?s a really important question these days, especially for (white, male, straight, educated, American) people like me ? where?s the way forward? It?s easy to talk about it in overtly political terms, but harder to work through on a personal level. When I was more involved in activism things were framed as being very clear-cut, and yet there weren?t a lot of answers for the issues i have personally with identity & maleness & whiteness, mostly because most of the available answers amount to ?your people suck.? Which is, of course, true. But, as a person who sucks, raised on a steady diet of suck in a terminally & worsening culture of ever-expanding suck, how do you live with that? How does one inhabit the monstrous shape of privilege? You can work to dismantle privilege? all you want & still not have an answer for how to live with yourself, in this system you represent & are a part of. Do I even deserve to reconcile my people?s legacy within myself? Do I even deserve to talk about that ? another white guy, Loudly Expressing His Important Opinions? Or, while fighting to expose & dissolve things like patriarchy, white supremacy, homophobia, [male] dominance, capitalism, technology, etc., do you reach a point (as someone like me) where you?ve entirely alienated yourself from yourself? And is that a good thing? Is that inevitable? What is left of myself, after all that privilege has been betrayed? It?s not like I?m going to get adopted into a new community. I get the feeling that there?s a lot of people like me dealing with these same problems. At least I hope they are. As I get older I feel more & more that, if we are going to effectively abandon the old, shitty culture, we will have to create a legitimate new one in order to still be human ? because the culture of radical youth, which is the best attempt at that we?ve had so far, is becoming increasingly unavailable to me. And frankly the attempts that I?ve seen at making that ?new world,? from white progressives or back-to-the-landers or postmodern hedonists or gun-accumulating libertarians or even anarchists, haven?t been very inspiring. But then, no one in the history of political thought or literature (sci-fi included) have been very good at tackling the ?so what happens now? questions. Even Marx?s ideas of the future were shit. So I guess these are problems I?m trying to work out for myself in my comics, as honestly as I can, using myself as the test subject.

?Sick?, I have to say, is one of the scariest, most thought provoking, beautiful, honest comics I?ve ever read, on a computer or on paper, easily. The pacing of it especially, slow, deliberate, each scene with it?s own beat and rhythm. How do you pace your stories? Do you listen to music while you?re creating or is there just an internal meter that propels your works forward?

It?s all internal, I guess. The way I drew ?Sick? was different from how I usually draw. I didn?t even know how long it was gonna be when I started, or whether anyone would even read it; I just had a website & threw some shit up there. I wasn?t thinking in terms of a whole story with a beginning an an end ? I just let it go where it wanted, in chunks. I thought that was the only way I could make it honest, because with subject matter as personal and sensitive as this, too much craft or narrative ? too much literaryness or graphic-novelness or whatever ? snuffs the life out of it. It?s so honest & self-eviscerating I have to basically trick myself into drawing it. It?s not always the best way to make comics (or live life) but I thought it was appropriate for the story (whatever that is).

Body horror seems to be a reoccurring theme in your work as well, the way you use it however, to sort of eviscerate yourself rather than in a Cronenberg way of dealing with broader human societal issues creates this dichotomy of horror and beauty, as in ?Sick? when you?re holding up the ball that contains all the angles of your life. To you, what?s more horrifying the world within or the world without?

I think after drawing Monsters & really examining what it means to coexist with a parasitic virus, it became clear how presumptuous we?ve been in the ?civilized? West to assume that we?re totally in control of our own bodies and minds. It turns out humans are not the Best Animal but are just one link in a vast, snarled, stuck-together, wending, gooey chain of life on Earth. Recent discoveries in parasitology have been pretty fascinating, & imply that there are a LOT more parasites crawling around in our bodies, affecting our choices, creating desires & fears, than we realize now. (See Carl Zimmer?s amazing Parasite Rex for an introduction to this stuff.) I?m horrified by all that, but also fascinated with the idea that we will ? that we must ? learn to accept these nebulous influences on our lives and identities, and adjust our perception of self to accommodate the thousands of little friends that have been working their influence on us since long before vertebrates were even a thing. Distinctions like ?good? & ?bad,? or even ?self? & ?other,? start to blur when you consider things like the fact that our mitochondria started out as sexually transmitted diseases:http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn4960-parasitic-invasion-credited-with-evolution-of-sex.html

I love what you?ve been doing with water color, what made you start? The colors in ?Weather?, they create this pallid, dirty palette that totally makes sense when dealing with the world of the inside of an airplane, at the same time, the contrast with the red, found everywhere outside the reach of the plane?s ugly, thick inhabitants, it?s a striking new direction for your work (I think, I mean I honestly discovered you myself a week before SPX).

I think seeing the work of Eleanor Davis & a bunch of French authors like Brecht Evans & Johann Sfar really got me excited about watercolors, they made them look so fun ? and i?ve always thought shading in photoshop looked awful, & crosshatching took forever, so I thought maybe watercolors were a way out of that. Also I finally got it in my head that I didn?t have to use xerox machines to print my work because it?s the 21st century, & I could use color whenever the hell I wanted. (?Weather? was my attempt to learn how to do it though, don?t tell anyone.)

Secret Acres is putting out ?Sick? in print next year, correct? Where can people find out more about that and other projects of yours?

Yeah, I think it might be debuting at next year?s TCAF in Toronto in May. I guess the Secret Acres site or twitter might be the best way? Oh duh, also my own website, www.gabbysplayhouse.com, which is currently being weird but still sort of works!
