Sprint gives LightSquared 30 more days to get FCC nod (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Sprint Nextel Corp extended a December 31 deadline for LightSquared Inc, with which it may share infrastructure, to get a regulatory clearance for operating a planned telecommunications network.

"We agreed to extend the deadline for 30 days," a Sprint spokesperson told Reuters by email.

The agreement between the two companies for sharing network infrastructure is subject to LightSquared obtaining approval from the United States Federal Communications Commission regarding some interference issues.

In July, LightSquared, bankrolled by billionaire Philip Falcone, agreed to pay Sprint $9 billion over 11 years to build a high-speed wireless network that the telecommunications startup will use to sell wholesale services.

But before it can build its network, LightSquared has to prove to regulators that it can eliminate interference problems with satellite services used in everything from airline navigation to agriculture and construction.

FA report says Suarez called opponent a 'Negro'

LONDON - A report by soccer authorities says Liverpool's Luis Suarez called Manchester United's Patrice Evra a "Negro" seven times in the incident that led to his ban for eight matches.

The report by an independent commission from the English Football Association was published Saturday. It says that when Evra asked Suarez during the October game why he had been kicked, the striker replied in Spanish: "Porque tu eres negro." That translates as "because you are black."

Evra said he would punch Suarez if he repeated the comment. Suarez replied: "No hablo con los negros" ? "I don't speak to blacks."

Suarez is from Uruguay and contends the use of "negro" in that country and other parts of Latin America is inoffensive in certain situations. The panel found his argument "unsustainable."

Myanmar sets April by-elections, Suu Kyi set to run (Reuters)

YANGON (Reuters) ? Myanmar has set a date of April 1, 2012, for by-elections that could see pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi enter parliament, although the military's grip on the assembly will not be threatened.

State television announced the date late Friday.

Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) refused to take part in elections in November 2010, disagreeing with the electoral process set in place by the former military leaders.

But, after a series of reforms initiated by the new, nominally civilian government this year, the NLD has agreed to register as a political party and now wants a voice in parliament.

NLD official Nyan Win said the Election Commission had not yet finished processing the application and its candidates would only be announced officially once that was done.

But he said Nobel peace laureate Suu Kii, 66, was expected to run for the lower house in the constituency of Kawhmu, about 30 km (20 miles) south of the main city, Yangon, where she lives.

A quarter of the seats in parliament are reserved for the military and a party close to the military won a huge majority of the contested seats in the 2010 election.

Election Commission Chairman Tin Aye told Aung San Suu Kyi recently at a meeting in the capital, Naypyitaw, that the commission would do its best to ensure a free and fair vote in the upcoming by-elections.

At least 48 seats will be contested in April -- 40 in the lower house, six in the upper house and two in regional parliaments. These are mainly for seats vacated by lawmakers who became ministers.

The government has also recently reached agreements with some armed ethnic groups to hold elections in the areas they control.

Researchers have created a potentially pain-free drug delivery system that uses an array of microneedles made of silk protein to get under the skin. Sophie Bushwick reports.

Nobody likes getting shots. But what if you could make the needles so tiny that they broke the skin painlessly? Engineers from Tufts University have created such microneedles?made from the major protein in silk, fibroin. The work is in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.[Konstantinos Tsioris et al, Fabrication of Silk Microneedles for Controlled-Release Drug Delivery]

The researchers created molds for arrays of needles just 500 microns tall and 10 microns wide. That?s a tenth the width of the average human hair. They then poured a solution of fibroin mixed with a drug into the molds. The resulting microneedles are dried and undergo further processing.

In tests, a patch containing numerous microneedles successfully released the drug, which maintained its biological activity. The tiny needles are too short to reach the nerves under the skin, so they can deliver drugs without the pain of a traditional shot. Even better, they can gradually release medication over time. While skin patches and slow-release pills are currently used for this purpose, they only work with certain kinds of medication. The new microneedle system could make the gradual delivery of many drugs smooth as silk.
