China marks HK handover anniversary with local military parade

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday urged Hong Kong's restive people to embrace the motherland as he visited the financial citadel for the 15th anniversary of its return to rule by Beijing.

Hu, whose three-day visit is his last as president before a key leadership reshuffle in Beijing, will preside over the inauguration of Leung Chun-ying as the city's next chief executive on Sunday.

But while he vowed to "walk more" and "see more" in Hong Kong, the first order of business on Hu's trip was a parade in front of the massed ranks of China's secretive military garrison.

The president stood to attention in an open-top vehicle, microphones arrayed in front of him, as he moved down the line of People's Liberation Army personnel, tanks and missile launchers in Hong Kong's remote New Territories.

"Thank you for your efforts comrades!" Hu, wearing a green uniform, shouted. The PLA members answered with a cry of "serve the people!" A huge banner aloft read "Love the motherland, love Hong Kong".

But polls indicate the highest level of anti-China discontent among Hong Kong's seven million populace since the 1997 handover from Britain, and the reaction on social media to the military show was caustic.

"It feels like we are in North Korea," one Hong Konger wrote on Facebook.

Several groups plan protests for Hu's visit despite a stifling police deployment. A march on Sunday is expected to draw tens of thousands demanding greater democracy and accusing Beijing of interfering in local affairs.

Authorities have erected giant barricades measuring more than two metres (6.5 feet) high around Hu's five-star hotel. Well away, one small knot of protestors on Friday kept up a clamour through a loudhailer.

Hu's schedule in Hong Kong has not been made known, apparently due to security concerns, apart from his expected attendance at Sunday's inauguration ceremony and a variety show to celebrate the anniversary on Saturday.

Prior to the PLA inspection, the Chinese president held a closed-door meeting with outgoing Chief Executive Donald Tsang and thanked him for his service. Tsang is stepping down after seven years in office.

His successor Leung was chosen by an election committee stacked with pro-Beijing elites, and many among the ordinary public say they feel disenfranchised amid a widening rich-poor gap and an influx of mainland cash.

"In the coming two days, I hope to be able to walk more, see more and personally feel the development of Hong Kong, understand the life and expectations of the Hong Kong people," Hu said on his arrival.

He said Hong Kong had achieved "significant" development since the handover and that the "one country, two systems" model, which guarantees the southern Chinese city a semi-autonomous status, had been upheld.

Hu, who last visited Hong Kong in 2007 for the 10th handover anniversary, also urged unity between Hong Kongers and their northern neighbours.

"The central government would like to use the valuable experience gained over the past 15 years with the people of all sectors in Hong Kong to unite together and look forward to further promote the practice of 'one country two systems'," the Chinese leader said.

Under the "two systems" principle, Hong Kong retains its own judicial and financial frameworks, with civil liberties including the right to demonstrate and press freedom not seen on the mainland.

Hu is expected to announce measures aimed at enhancing economic cooperation between Hong Kong and Beijing during his visit, as part of China's use of the city as a testing ground to turn the yuan into a global currency.

Chinese officials on Friday announced incentives for a financial zone in Shenzhen, close to the Hong Kong border, which will be jointly developed by both sides. It is due for completion by 2020.

Despite the closer integration, unease has been growing as Hong Kongers chafe at an influx of newly rich Chinese mainlanders, accusing them of taking everything from school places and maternity beds to baby milk formula.

A telephone poll of more than 1,000 people released last week by the University of Hong Kong showed mistrust among Hong Kongers toward Beijing at a new post-handover high of 37 percent.

By contrast, a poll released in August 2008 after the Beijing Olympics showed the figure at a relatively low 14 percent, when nationalistic sentiment was strong throughout China.

Prior to the handover, mistrust levels stood at 44 percent in May 1997.

Earth's oldest impact crater found in Greenland

You'd have to go to the moon or Mars to find a bigger impact crater than the one discovered in Greenland.

An asteroid 30 kilometres across smashed into Greenland three billion years ago, creating a crater that was once 25 kilometres deep and 600 kilometres wide.

That dwarfs the oldest known impact crater on Earth, the Vredefort crater in South Africa, both in age and size. The Vredefort is about two billion years old and about 300 kilometres across.

The new find is centred to the east of what is now the town of Maniitsoq on Greenland's western coastline. What remains of the original crater is only about 100 kilometres wide.

This, according to the geologists who discovered the crater, explains why it remained undiscovered until now. Only the deepest parts of the crater survive. All the near-surface and easily recognisable features of the crater have been worn away. "The rocks we see today were about 25 kilometres down when the impact occurred," says Adam Garde of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland in Copenhagen, Denmark, who led the team.

After three years of intensive work, Garde and his colleagues now say they have enough evidence to support their claim.

The most compelling evidence is the presence of granite-like rocks that are crushed, melted and pulverised in a way that can only be explained by a sudden, massive impact. The deformed granite is spread throughout an area measuring 35 by 50 kilometres, centred on the supposed impact site.

Such large-scale deformation of granite could not have happened over such a large area through any known terrestrial geologic process. "You might see something similar in a geologic fault zone, but not in a circle 100 kilometres across," says team member Iain McDonald of Cardiff University.

Also, the quartz deposits in the impact zone have micro-cracks and flaws that are fairly consistent with those found in quartz from known impact sites. When the researchers measured the angles between the cracks and the orientation of each quartz crystal, the patterns broadly matched those of an impact shockwave, not the random patterns formed by known terrestrial processes of tectonic pushing and pulling.

"The patterns conformed to what you would expect from impacts, not from those that happen through terrestrial geology," says McDonald.

Not everyone is completely convinced that the geologists have found an impact crater. "It points towards it being a crater, but frustratingly, I don't know if it will ever be proven," says John Spray, a specialist in impact science at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Canada, who is familiar with the work. "On the other hand, I don't think anyone can definitively say it isn't a crater."

Nonetheless, Spray is pleased. "I think they've done a great job, and no-one could probably have done more," he says. "Also, it stimulates impact specialists like myself to look for other extremely old impacts ? there are probably multiple impact points on earth, but we don't recognise them."

The claimed impact occurred 2.4 billion years before the Cambrian "explosion" of life 580 million years ago. The asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs was even more recent, occurring 65 million years ago.

When the alleged asteroid struck Greenland, the Earth's only inhabitants were algae and cyanobacteria, so its effects on evolution are unknowable. If it struck today, it would probably wipe out much of life on Earth.

OnLive shows up in a Sony Google TV-based internet Blu-ray player (exclusive)

OnLive hasn?t announced any deals with Sony yet to get its cloud gaming service into Sony products. But we?ve spotted a very interesting reference to OnLive in a new Sony internet streaming Blu-ray player with Google TV.

As you can see in the specifications section below, OnLive?s gaming controller/universal serial bus dongle are listed as an optional accessory in the Sony device. That means that the device likely comes with OnLive preloaded on it. This is the first sign that Sony and OnLive have a deal in place, and that could be a big boost for cloud gaming. Sony?s new Blu-ray player will is available for pre-order now and will ship on July 9.

OnLive allows players to stream games from remote servers in a web-connected data center, or ?cloud.? This means that high-end games can run on low-end machines, since the actual processing and rendering are being done elsewhere. This means that you can play high-end console-quality games on a TV set (embedded with the OnLive app) without the need for a game console. All you need is a controller, like the one listed below. Since this kind of technology has a chance of making the consoles obsolete, you can see why this would be a delicate matter at Sony, maker of the PlayStation 3. OnLive declined to comment on the Sony deal.

Rumors surfaced recently that Microsoft had talks with OnLive about an acquisition, and there was a rumor that Sony?s PlayStation business would announce a deal with OnLive at E3. Neither of those rumors have come true.

OnLive already has announced deals with Vizio and LG, which will both ship TVs with the OnLive player built into them. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), OnLive showed how you can find the OnLive app via the Google TV user interface on upcoming TVs from LG.

Sony, of course, is a different animal. OnLive can help enhance Sony?s TVs and Blu-ray players by making high-end games available on TV sets. OnLive?s rival Gaikai announced a deal to provide cloud gaming for Samsung TVs.

2012 NCAA Div. II champ T.J. Hepburn makes his pro MMA debut Saturday

T.J. Hepburn, 2012 NCAA Division II wrestling champ for University of Nebraska-Kearney, will make his professional mixed martial arts debut Saturday night.

In his first pro fight, the former UNK Loper mat star will face fellow rookie Jeremy Mier at Resurrection Fighting Alliance?s RFA 3 event at the 5,000-seat Viaero Event Center in Kearney, Neb. on the same card where Bubba Jenkins, 2011 NCAA Division I champ for Arizona State, will have his third pro bout, taking on Jesus Adame.

However, Hepburn is hardly new to MMA. According a Thursday profile in the Kearney Hub, Hepburn was introduced to mixed martial arts during his junior year at Ledyard High School in East Hampton, Conn. He's had three amateur MMA bouts, with the first back in July 2007.

Hepburn's wrestling career goes back even further. The Connecticut native first took up the sport at age 4. In high school, Hepburn was a four-time state finalist and three-time state champ, compiling a 200-4 record. He started his college career at Colby Community College in Kansas, where he was a NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) runner-up at 149 pounds in 2008. At Nebraska-Kearney, Hepburn was a three-time NCAA D2 All-American, concluding his career by winning the 157-pound crown at the 2012 NCAAs by pinning Jarrod Shaw of West Liberty at 1:17 in the title match.

Gene therapy curbs nicotine addiction in mice

Forget patches: gene therapy could suppress cigarette cravings by preventing the brain from receiving nicotine. The treatment is effective in mice, but with gene therapy still not fully tested in people, human trials and treatments are a long way off.

For drug users who really can't quit, vaccination might one day be an option, and several groups have attempted to develop such treatments.

But nicotine vaccines have mostly flopped. This is because nicotine is a very small molecule, so the immune system has difficulty recognising the drug and making antibodies that bind it. Physicians can inject antibodies directly into a patient, but this treatment quickly becomes expensive because the antibodies don't last long.

Ronald Crystal of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York and his team decided to bypass that problem by putting the gene for a nicotine antibody right into the body.

They selected the strongest antibody against nicotine from a mouse and isolated the gene that produced it. They then placed this gene into a carrier called adeno-associated virus (AAV), which is widely used for gene therapyMovie Camera.

When the researchers injected the virus and its cargo into nicotine-addicted mice, the rodents' livers took up the virus, began making antibodies and pumped them into the bloodstream. The researchers injected two cigarettes' worth of nicotine into AAV-infected mice. The antibodies were able to bind 83 per cent of the drug before it reached the brain.

Different response

Without their drug, the mice's behaviour changed. Nicotine usually causes mice to "chill out", Crystal says, but the researchers found that the treated mice stayed active and their heart rates stayed normal when they received nicotine.

Eighteen weeks later, the mice's livers were still making the antibody, suggesting that the therapy might render nicotine useless to smokers for long periods.

Jude Samulski at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who was part of the team that developed AAV as a gene therapy vector, says he's "ecstatic" that the vector has come so far. He calls the research "a gorgeous piece of work" that has "leapfrogged" the difficulties faced by vaccines.

But he has doubts about whether gene therapy is well-tested enough to be used to treat nicotine addiction. So far, AAV has been clinically tested in people with HIV or terminal cancer where potential benefits far outweigh the risks. "It's ahead of its time. In 10 years there may be enough safety data," he says. "Quitting smoking might be easier."

Thomas Kosten of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, shares those doubts. Unlike patients with terminal diseases, "smokers are normal people with decades of life ahead of them", he says, and gene therapy can be risky. He believes that a better, safer vaccine will be developed by the time this system passes safety tests.

Crystal agrees that human studies are many years away: the next step is to test the vector in primates. In the meantime, he says, the same model could be useful to develop gene therapies for methamphetamine, cocaine or any addictive drug.

Genetic variant is linked to obesity and insulin resistance

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? A large study in people at risk of diabetes has found a direct association between the presence of a small genetic alteration in a hormone receptor and increased body fat and insulin resistance. The results, presented June 26 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston, suggest an adverse role for a previously described genetic variant, the BclI polymorphism.

"Our findings support the idea that even small variations in hormone receptor sensitivity can have metabolic implications, such as obesity or diabetes," said co-author Bastiaan Havekes, MD, PhD, of Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

"Endocrinologists should not just focus on hormone levels themselves. Taking into account hormone receptor sensitivity could help in better understanding hormone-mediated effects on metabolism," he said.

The inherited BclI polymorphism occurs in the gene encoding for the glucocorticoid receptor, which controls the actions of glucocorticoids, steroid hormones that affect every system in the body. This small variant makes the receptor more sensitive to glucocorticoids, resulting in greater effects with similar hormone levels, Havekes said.

The effects of this change appear to be similar to, although much smaller than, the excessive glucocorticoid exposure that can occur from certain medications or diseases, Havekes said. Such excess exposure can result in weight gain, especially around the abdomen, as well as in disturbed blood sugar metabolism. This exposure most often occurs from long-term use of prednisone or other glucocorticoid medications, which are widely used to treat inflammatory diseases or to suppress the immune system. It also can result from endocrine diseases such as Cushing's syndrome. Cushing's causes overproduction in the body of the glucocorticoid cortisol, often called the "stress hormone."

Patients in this study, however, did not have known excess exposure to glucocorticoids, according to Havekes. He and his co-investigators studied 1,228 adults who participated in one of two Dutch studies focusing on diabetes in the general population. More than half of the study participants had either prediabetes (23 percent) or Type 2 diabetes (33 percent). All subjects underwent genetic testing for the BclI polymorphism.

The researchers found that 519 subjects did not carry the alternative form of the gene, or G-allele, for the BclI polymorphism on either chromosome. Another 540 subjects were heterozygous carriers, meaning the G-allele was present on one of the two chromosomes. The remaining 169 subjects were homozygous carriers and therefore carried the G-allele on both chromosomes.

Those who had the BclI polymorphism on each chromosome had a significantly higher body mass index and larger waist and hip circumferences than did noncarriers or heterozygous carriers, the authors reported. This was reflected by greater insulin resistance, meaning that insulin is less effective at lowering blood glucose (blood sugar).

"Determining an individual's genetic risk profile for metabolic disease is of paramount importance to prevent development of cardiovascular diseases," he said. "Future studies concerning cardiovascular risk profiling should perhaps consider the BclI polymorphism."

Air Force Reserve wants an app for basic training

12 hrs.

Military recruits have marched off to boot camp with nothing more than their families' well-wishes in the past, but today's warriors could get a little help from their smartphones. The U.S. Air Force Reserve has drawn up a wish list for a smartphone app that can help recruits adjust to basic training and military life.

The dream app combines nutrition and exercise features that even civilian smartphone owners might envy. One app feature would count calories based on photos of food taken by the phone. Another would map a recruit's runs based on their smartphone GPS. A third feature would even provide a digital assistant similar to the Apple iPhone's Siri that can talk fitness encouragement to trainees.

But the app ideas list also has plenty of military-centric features based on learning military law, chain of command or individual responsibilities as an Air Force Reserve member. Even suggested games have themes, including "Name the Military Tune" or "Weapons Familiarization" for the U.S. military's standard-issue M-16 assault rifle ? not to mention games for learning rank, chain of command, military law, and Air Force history.

Such games would combine with possible social networking features that include basic profile information (including gender, base of assignment and ship date) and help bring people together for carpooling or to cooperate in fitness challenges. The Air Force Reserve envisions the app allowing up to 4,000 users at a time accessing the Internet through smartphone, netbook, tablet or computer.

The Air Force Reserve put out the call for interested smartphone app-makers in a "request for information" notice on June 13 with an original deadline of June 26 for any interested app-makers. But it has already extended the contact due date to July 6 because of "significant interest and questions."

CDC trying out free AIDS tests at drugstores

ATLANTA (AP) ? Getting an AIDS test at the drugstore could become as common as a flu shot or blood pressure check, if a new pilot program takes off.

The $1.2 million program will offer the free rapid HIV tests at pharmacies and in-store clinics in 24 cities and rural communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

"We believe we can reach more people by making testing more accessible and reduce the stigma associated with HIV," Dr. Kevin Fenton, who oversees the agency's HIV prevention programs, said in a statement.

The tests are already available at seven places, including Washington, D.C., Oakland, Calif., and an Indian health service clinic in Montana. The CDC will soon pick 17 more locations.

The HIV test is a swab inside the mouth; it takes about 20 minutes for a preliminary result. The test maker says it's correct 99 percent of the time. If the test is positive for the AIDS virus, pharmacy employees will refer customers to a local health department or other health care providers for a lab blood test to confirm the results, counseling and treatment. The workers are expected to deliver the news face-to-face and give customers privacy, the CDC said.

An estimated 1.1 million Americans are infected with HIV, but as many as 20 percent of them don't know they carry the virus, according to the CDC. It can take a decade or more for an infection to cause symptoms and illness.

Since 2006, the CDC has recommended that all Americans ages 13 to 64 get tested at least once, not just those considered at highest risk: gay men and intravenous drug users. But fewer than half of adults younger than 65 have been tested, according to the agency's most recent statistics.

It's important to know about infection not only for treating the condition but also to take steps to prevent spreading it to others. An HIV diagnosis used to be a death sentence, but medications now allow those infected to live longer and healthier lives.

On special occasions, health organizations have sent workers to some drugstores to offer HIV testing. This week, Walgreens ? the nation's largest chain of pharmacies ? is teaming with health departments and AIDS groups to offer free tests in 20 cities.

But in that program, health professionals conduct the tests and deliver the news. The CDC program aims to train pharmacy staff to test and deliver the results themselves.

"I'm excited. It's such a new and novel thing for us," said Sarah Freedman, who manages a Walgreens in Washington, D.C., that is participating in the pilot program.

At her pharmacy, prominent signs advertise the test, which is then done in a private room. The pharmacy has also taken steps to let a customer discreetly request the test, putting out stacks of special test request cards ? they look like business cards ? at George Washington University and nearby businesses. Anyone seeking a test can simply hand the card to the clerk, she said.

Only three or four customers have gone through with a test in the first few weeks.

"We get a lot of questions," she said. "Usually they get the information and they go and sit on it and think about it."

The drugstores are expected to keep the test confidential. Pharmacy workers are to refer customers with positive tests to counseling and other services.

When the project ends next summer, CDC officials will analyze what worked well and what didn't, said Paul Weidle, the epidemiologist who is heading up the project.

The program carries both promise and potential pitfalls, said Julie Davids, a longtime advocate who now works for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.

More testing is a plus, she said. And even if they don't get a free test, signs in the drugstores may prompt people to get tested at a doctor's office or clinic where they feel more comfortable, said Davids.

But Davids said pharmacies more used to handling cholesterol screenings might have difficulty responding to patients who learn in a drugstore they're HIV-positive.

"A person may freeze up and fall apart later," or get emotional on the spot and even talk about suicide, she said.

In addition to Freedman's store, a second Walgreens in Washington is offering the test, as well as branches in Chicago and Lithonia, Ga. The other sites are East Pines Pharmacy in Riverdale, Md., Mike's Pharmacy in Oakland, Calif. and a federal Indian Health Service location in Billings, Mont.

Each location will get enough tests to check 200 to 300 people. Made by OraSure Technologies Inc., the $17.50 test is the only government-approved rapid HIV test that uses saliva. Other rapid tests on the market analyze a finger-prick blood sample. The tests are used routinely in doctor's offices, hospitals and clinics.

The OraSure swab test's stick-like testing device is used to wipe the inside of the mouth, then it is put in a solution, said company spokesman Ron Ticho. If two lines appear, that indicates a positive test.

The company is seeking government approval to sell it over-the-counter for home testing. A decision is expected later this year.

The test is sold in about 40 countries, including Mexico, Italy, South Korea and South Africa. Ticho said he is not aware of another country where pharmacies routinely offer the testing.

Build the Ultimate Laptop Desk

Modern laptops are exercises in restraint. The trend toward super-lightweight, razor-thin ultrabooks has forced computer makers to jettison extravagances such as optical drives, large-capacity hard drives, extra ports, big screens, and multi-memory-card readers. Most of that stuff just weighed us down when we took our laptops on the road. But the thing is, when you sit at your desk, you sort of want it all back. Optical discs may be a thing of the past, but we've got plenty of such things of the past sitting in our offices. Cloud storage for your files is nice, but a 2-terabyte drive on your desktop is even nicer. And a laptop with two USB ports is about four short of acceptable.

So we decided to make the best of both worlds. We took a Dell XPS 13, one of the sleekest, sexiest ultrabooks on the market, and designed a docking station that incorporated everything the computer was lacking and then some. The idea was to take a sturdy, generic desk from Crate and Barrel, then screw and strap a bunch of accessories onto it?a perfect marriage of home electronics and Home Depot.

We insisted on a few eccentricities that, frankly, made the project a lot harder. For instance, our 24-inch Sony PlayStation 3D display didn't have standard VESA mounting points to mate to our swing-arm Ergotron desk mount, so we drilled a few holes into a steel plate and fashioned our own adapter bracket. That allowed us to hide a PS3 under the desk and use the monitor for computing and 3D gaming. Why, you ask? Well, why not? If the Dell ultrabook demonstrates the elegance of understatement, the desk underneath it is our tribute to the awesomeness of overkill.

How Much Gear Can We Fit Onto A Single Desk?

1. We took a slim, lightweight Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook ($1000) and modified a desk with extra components to fatten up its functionality. Here's what we added.

2. Macally EcofanPro ($40) This beautiful bamboo laptop stand has an integrated cooling fan.

3. Playstation 3 320 GB ($300) All work and no play...

4. Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000($90) A two-part keyboard saves space?stow the number pad when you don't need it.

5. Sony PlayStation 3D Display ($500) The monitor for our laptop and PlayStation shows games in 3D or gives two players separate views.

6. Wacom Intuos5 (Large) ($470) Both a touchpad and a pen-input tablet, with 102 square inches of work area.

7. Altec Lansing BXR1220 2.0 Speaker System ($20)

8. Optical drive ($32) and card reader ($22) We went the bargain-basement generic route on these components, then hid them beneath the desktop.

9. Tursion Unimax Charging Dock ($39) This charger has four interchangeable ports for smartphones, iPods, etc.

10. Twelve South HoverBar ($80) This gooseneck mount clamps to a desk and suspends your iPad in midair.

Mod Your Desk

That "finished" piece of furniture you bought is a few holes, wires, ports, and outlets short of its cyborg ideal. Charge up your power tools. 1. Start With The Boring Stuff

Position your equipment where you want it on the desk. Group the gear around one or two spots where you can route all of your wiring, then mark those spots for drilling. Clear off the gadgets and tape the desk surface to prevent damage. A 1-inch holesaw will make an opening for five or six wires.

2. Free Your Monitor

This PlayStation 3D monitor was not made to be mounted, but we did it anyway, using a few semi-trustworthy anchor points and an Ergotron LX desk mount ($170). A monitor on a swing arm is worth the trouble?it frees up desk space and lets you place your screen virtually anywhere.

3. Embrace The Underbelly

If you're trying to accommodate lots of stuff, try this tactic: We flipped our desk over and attached components (PS3, optical drive, extra USB ports) to the underside using plastic plumber's tape. When possible, we also used the desk's existing fasteners.

4. Don't Skimp on Outlets

We needed a power strip, but we didn't want to see it. And don't you just hate it when surge protectors get crowded by large adapters? This 4-foot-long Tripp Lite strip ($48) fixed both problems with 16 amply spaced outlets and mounting brackets that let you hide it under the desk.

Where are car repairs the most expensive?

A new study from CarMD shows that the overall cost of repairs declined six percent in 2011, from an average of $356 to $334. For drivers seeking repairs in five Western states, however, the costs were much higher, at an average of $360.

The second annual study looked at 163,582 auto repairs in 2011 and ranked them state by state. Wyoming leads the nation for most expensive car repairs, recording an average $389.18 repair bill, with $247.70 in parts and $141.48 in labor costs.

Why is Wyoming at the top of the list for most expensive car repairs? According to CarMD, Wyoming repair costs were 17 percent higher than the US average. The most common auto repair in Wyoming, and nationwide, was ?Replace Oxygen (O2) Sensor,? accounting for 10.10 percent of the state?s auto repairs last year. ?Failure to replace the O2 sensor not only reduces fuel efficiency, but can also lead to more serious problems ? such as a faulty catalytic converter. Engine seizure and a roadside breakdown may be the result of such neglected repair. ?Replace Catalytic Converter? accounted for 5.72 percent of Wyoming?s 2011 repairs. And this is a costly repair, averaging $1,030.63, since it requires three expensive precious metals: platinum, palladium and rhodium.

Top five-states for average total auto repair costs for ?Check Engine Light?

  • Wyoming - $389.18
  • Utah - $378.54
  • California - $367.86
  • Montana - $364.29
  • Arizona - $362.65

At the bottom of the state-by-state ranking, in terms of lowest overall average auto repair costs for ?Check Engine Light? are the following five states, three of which are in the Midwest:

  • Indiana - $283.95
  • Maine - $289.56
  • Wisconsin - $289.90
  • Iowa - $289.91
  • New Hampshire - $292.66

Sony kicks off an Xperia Ion TV ad campaign for the US, meets your daily explosion quota

Sony isn't known for rolling out the red carpet when one of its phones arrives Stateside, although that's partly because US carrier-endorsed versions are few and far between. It clearly sees the Xperia Ion as worth the five-star treatment it's giving the rest of the 2012 Xperia line: the company is starting a rare TV ad campaign to pitch its 720p wunderkind to an American audience that might not have noticed the Ericsson badge going away. As you'd expect, the pseudo single-take spot ends up being as much a vehicle for pushing other Sony projects as it does for the Android phone in question; we hope you don't mind getting a brand overdose. With that in mind, there's more action and explosions per square capita than in any other smartphone ad in recent memory, so if you're upset that other smartphone ads are just too... peaceful, click Play and get your fill of danger.

5 Benefits of Martial Arts as Daily Exercise to ... - MMA Acupuncture

By?Ryan Rivera ?-

How Martial Arts Affects Anxiety

A woman experiencing anxiety

? Ooi Hong Kiong

All exercise has benefits for anxiety, but martial arts can be particularly valuable, especially if you take the activity seriously and do it every day. Some of these benefits include:

Perhaps the greatest effect that martial arts has on anxiety is that it is a tool to give you control over yourself and your surroundings. Those that learn martial arts learn discipline, and that discipline affects more than simply the movements within MA itself. That control allows you to handle your emotions in your day to day life as well, keeping you calm and focused rather than letting your mind and thoughts scatter.

It?s easy to forget how much confidence also affects your ability to control your anxiety. When you?re confident in yourself, then you know that you?ll be able to more easily handle any events that life may throw at you. It?s not always about controlling all of your anxious thoughts. Rather, it?s about experiencing less of a feeling of ?flight? when faced with a stressful situation. Martial arts provides this confidence, so that rarely will you feel there are things you cannot handle.

When you do experience a stressful day, MA is a great way to relieve much of that stress. In a controlled and safe environment, you have an opportunity to release much of that stressful energy. Any aggression you have inside you is used as a tool, rather than a hindrance. You harness it, and allow the energy to fuel your MA sequences and bouts, brining that energy outside of your body so that it isn?t being held back.

Not all anxiety is caused by your thoughts. In fact, in most Americans, one of the leading causes of anxiety is simply excess physical energy. As a result of the mind/body connection, that energy is then turned into anxiety, because your body has no other form of release. Martial arts uses all of your muscles and tires each of them out. Any anxiety caused by excess muscular energy goes away, and you?re left with a calmer body and a calmer mind.

  • Healthy Social Experience

Finally, one of the most often forgotten benefits of MA as an anxiety reduction tool is that you?re always with at least one other person, performing actions that are healthy and productive. With today?s busy and complex lifestyle, this time that you spend surrounded by other people of similar interests is incredibly healthy ? a type of social environment that few people normally have an opportunity to fit into their schedules. It?s a 100% healthy coping strategy that takes your mind off the troubles of the day, and the benefits of that should not be overlooked.

Using MA to Relieve Anxiety

In addition to the benefits outlined above, all forms of exercise also burn stress hormones and increase endorphins ? the body?s natural pain killers. Combine those benefits with all of the advantages outlined above, and you?ll see why MA is such a powerful way to reduce your daily anxiety and stress. As long as you put effort into your martial arts practices, you?ll find that your anxiety melts away.
