LinkedIn And The Mutable Rules Of Social Networking

4174759451_0066a9d8ffWhen I started using LinkedIn (in 2008) the service put a lot of emphasis on only connecting with people you had indubitably ?done business with?. Which made it pretty straightforward to decide when to click ?accept? and when not to. But in recent years I?ve been getting increasing numbers of LinkedIn requests from strangers. So the old rules of interaction aren't working anymore.

The NCAA Fails Nutritional Needs Of Student AthletesYour Health ...

From Forbes?..

I have assumed ever since I could spell sports that the NCAA requires schools to provide a qualitative nutritional program for student athletes ? since the schools lure these special teenagers away from their parents? kitchens in exchange for a scholarship ? since schools vow that they care more about the students than winning games ? and since a strong healthy athlete is good for winning games. And particularly in the big-money sports like football where the teenagers are subjected to grueling boot camps during hot 2-a day summers and beyond, with time commitments akin to a full-time-job. And whatever food isn?t provided by the school, I?ve pretty much assumed they get all kind of extra benefits, including however many broccoli spears and carrots sticks they need.

But when a premier group of sports dietitians have to beg the NCAA to require that schools properly feed student-athletes, something in the value system is malnourished. The President of the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association (CPSD), Amy Bragg, directs performance nutrition for the University of Alabama athletics department. Currently, the NCAA regulations restrict players to one formal ?training meal? per day for scholarship athletes, no matter what the sport, no matter how rigorous the training. The CPSD request to the NCAA is to go beyond that regulation, to allow the student athletes ?unfettered? access to ?whole foods?and, as necessary, dietary supplements, to replace nutrients, fluids and electrolytes expended while preparing for their sport.?

You mean they don?t already do that? Surely the NCAA, an association of colleges and universities that are trustees of these teenagers does the right thing for something as basic as food ? especially for the sports that generate the vast majority of the revenue for the organization and pays most of their salaries and expenses.

Cover Letter: Sales Letter or Not? - Quintessential Resumes and ...

Concluding a series a series of excerpts by Susan Ireland from this article. As we did in our cover-letter white paper not long ago, Ireland examines some conventional wisdom about cover letters.

Conventional Wisdom: Make your cover letter a sales letter.

Ireland?s response: Yes and no. You resume cover letter is a sales letter in the sense that it pitches you to the recruiter or hiring manager. It should also paint a picture of you at the job interview by showing that you know what the company does, what value you offer, and what you?d like to discuss in person. While saying this, your cover letter should reveal your professional personality so the reader gets a sense of you ? the person he?ll be sitting with in the interview.
But an over-the-top sales letter is not appropriate for most job objectives. It may work very well for sales, marketing, and promotion jobs where a ?salesy? approach is expected and valued. But that same sales-letter approach will likely fall like a rock off a cliff for an IT professional, accountant, school teacher, and frankly most occupations not involved with sales.

US economic growth improves in third quarter

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy grew at a slightly faster 2 percent annual rate from July through September, buoyed by more spending by consumers and the federal government.

Growth accelerated from the 1.3 percent rate in the April-June quarter, the Commerce Department said Friday.

The report is the last snapshot of economic growth before Americans choose a president in 11 days.

The pickup in growth could lend weight to President Barack Obama's message that the economy is improving. Still, growth remains too weak to rapidly boost hiring.

And the 1.74 percent annual growth rate for the first nine months of 2012 trails last year's 1.8 percent growth ? a point that Republican nominee Mitt Romney has emphasized.

"Growth came in a little higher than we had feared, largely because of the big jump in federal spending," said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics. "But the economy is still not growing rapidly enough to create sufficient jobs to reduce the unemployment rate."

The economy grew faster last quarter because consumer spending rose at a 2 percent annual rate, up from a 1.5 percent rate in the second quarter. Spending on homebuilding and renovations increased at an annual rate of more than 14 percent. And federal spending surged, mainly because of the sharpest increase in defense spending in more than three years.

Growth was held back by the first drop in exports in more than three years and flat business investment in equipment and software.

The economy was also slowed by the severe drought last summer in the Midwest. The drought cut agriculture stockpiles and reduced growth by nearly a half-point.

The government's report covers gross domestic product. GDP measures the nation's total output of goods and services ? from restaurant meals and haircuts to airplanes, appliances and highways.

It was the government's first of three estimates of growth for the July-September quarter. And it sketched a picture that's been familiar all year: The economy is growing at a tepid rate, slowed by high unemployment and corporate anxiety over an unresolved budget crisis and a slowing global economy.

While growth remains modest, the factors supporting the economy have changed. Exports and business investment drove growth for most of the recovery, but are now fading. Meanwhile, consumer spending has ticked up. And housing is adding to growth after a six-year slump.

Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.

Businesses have grown more cautious since spring, in part because customer demand has remained modest and exports have declined as the global economy has slowed.

Many companies worry that their overseas sales could dampen further if recession spreads throughout Europe and growth slows further in China, India and other developing countries. Businesses also fear the tax increases and government spending cuts that will kick in next year if Congress doesn't reach a budget deal.

Since the recovery from the Great Recession began in June 2009, the U.S. economy has grown at the slowest rate of any recovery in the post-World War II period. And economists think growth will remain sluggish at least through the first half of 2013.

Some analysts believe the economy will start to pick up in the second half of next year.

PFT: A 'Free Sean Payton' photo op with Goodell

Washington Redskins v New York GiantsGetty Images

Week Seven was a very lucky week for yours truly.? With an unlucky 13 games on the schedule, I got 12 of them correct, with only a late comeback from the Titans blocking an unprecedented piece of perfection.

More importantly, MDS and I disagreed on three games.? Thanks to the Cowboys, Saints, and Colts, my two-game season-to-date lead has been extended to five games.

For the year, I?m now 67-37, and MDS is 62-42.

MDS will join Thursday?s PFT Live to discuss this week?s picks.? There will be no gloating.

    At least not by him.

    Buccaneers at Vikings

MDS?s take: After I was burned by picking the Bucs last week on the way to going 0-for-3 on games where I disagreed with Florio, I?m playing it safe this week. Tampa Bay still looks to me like a team that?s headed in the right direction, but right now the Vikings have too much for the Bucs on both sides of the ball and should win this one comfortably.

    MDS?s pick: Vikings 27, Buccaneers 13.

Florio?s take:? The Vikings get a chance to show how different they are this year against one of the teams to whom the Vikings blew a big halftime lead last year.? This time, if the Vikings are up by 10 or more at the break, look for them to close it out with a defense that finally is good enough to hold leads.

    Florio?s pick:? Vikings 21, Buccaneers 19.

    Panthers at Bears

MDS?s take: Cam Newton is going to bounce back from this slump he?s in eventually. He?s too talented not to. But the Bears are the wrong team for a young quarterback to bounce back against. Chicago?s relentless pressure will force a few turnovers and lead to another loss for the Panthers.

    MDS?s pick: Bears 20, Panthers 10.

Florio?s take:? Rattled by the ouster of G.M. Marty Hurney, racked by injuries, and reeling from the sad-sack demeanor of Cam Newton, the Panthers are poised to get plastered.

    Florio?s pick:? Bears 31, Panthers 10.

    Chargers at Browns

MDS?s take: The Chargers have had two weeks to lick their wounds after that disastrous Monday night meltdown against the Broncos. They?ll come in to Cleveland focused and motivated and win this one comfortably.

    MDS?s pick: Chargers 31, Browns 17.

Florio?s take:? If Mike Holmgren?s current team can knock off the Chargers, the Chargers could be Mike Holmgren?s next team.? Though a house-cleaning could still be coming, the Chargers will likely do enough to reverse a bad two weeks of blown leads and stickum, allegedly.

    Florio?s pick:? Chargers 24, Browns 17.

    Seahawks at Lions

MDS?s take: Mistakes keep killing the Lions, whether it?s penalties, turnovers or special teams coverage breakdowns. If the Lions could get out of their own way they could go on a run down the stretch and still contend for a wild card berth, but that doesn?t look likely at this point. Seattle is the team that looks like a playoff contender, and the Seahawks will take another step in that direction with a win on the road.

    MDS?s pick: Seahawks 17, Lions 14.

Florio?s take:? If this one were set for Seattle, it would be a no brainer.? In Detroit, the Seahawks have an opportunity to prove that they?re capable of beating better-than-bad teams in a place other than CenturyLink Field.

    Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 17, Lions 16.

    Jaguars at Packers

MDS?s take: In the biggest mismatch of the week, the Jaguars? offense will look even worse than usual without Maurice Jones-Drew, and Aaron Rodgers will have his third consecutive huge game.

    MDS?s pick: Packers 34, Jaguars 3.

Florio?s take:? The Packers have never beaten the Jaguars at Lambeau Field.? Then again, these teams have played there only once.? The Jags will want to forget their second trip to town.

    Florio?s pick:? Packers 45, Jaguars 21.

    Dolphins at Jets

MDS?s take: I?m impressed that the Jets aren?t going down without a fight. When they lost Darrelle Revis and got blown out by the 49ers, I figured the Jets were finished, but they?ve played good football for the last three weeks, even if they have only one win to show for it in those three games. The Jets will beat the Dolphins in a low-scoring game and get back to .500.

    MDS?s pick: Jets 13, Dolphins 10.

Florio?s take:? Despite the injuries and the ineffectiveness and the uncertainty, the Jets have improved over the past few weeks.? They?re good enough to complete the sweep of a Dolphins team that has improved even more discreetly.

    Florio?s pick:? Jets 30, Dolphins 20.

    Falcons at Eagles

MDS?s take: The Eagles know their backs are against the wall, and the Falcons have been scraping by with three straight close wins. This looks to me like the day when the Falcons? luck runs out, and the last unbeaten team in the league gets beaten.

    MDS?s pick: Eagles 24, Falcons 21.

Florio?s take:? Andy Reid is 13-0 after the bye week.? Sometimes, there?s no need for elaboration.

    Florio?s pick:? Eagles 24, Falcons 23.

    Redskins at Steelers

MDS?s take: The Steelers took a big step toward the playoffs with last week?s win in Cincinnati, and I like them to keep it going against the Redskins. Look for Steelers tight end Heath Miller to have a big game against the Redskins? defense, just as Giants tight end Martellus Bennett, Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez have in the Redskins? last three games.

    MDS?s pick: Steelers 28, Redskins 27.

Florio?s take:? The Steelers are 20-2-1 at Heinz Field against NFC teams.? But Heinz Field has never seen anything like RG3, who?ll run circles around a Polamalu-free Pittsburgh defense.

    Florio?s pick:? Redskins 23, Steelers 20.

    Patriots at Rams

MDS?s take: The Rams? secondary has been playing well and the Patriots? secondary has been leaving receivers wide open, and I?m tempted to pick the upset for that reason. But with Danny Amendola hurt I don?t think the Rams have the ammunition to take advantage of the Patriots? problems on defense, and I think New England?s running game can churn up yardage at Wembley Stadium and lead the Patriots to a low-scoring win.

    MDS?s pick: Patriots 16, Rams 10.

Florio?s take:? The team whose name pays homage to the men who kicked the butts of the Brits like to kick butt in Britain.? Though it won?t be a blowout like it was three years ago against the Bucs, the Pats should be able to build a fourth-quarter lead.? And hold it.? For a change.

    Florio?s pick:? Patriots 27, Rams 21.

    Colts at Titans

MDS?s take: Titans running back Chris Johnson took advantage of a bad Bills defense last week, and he should be able to take advantage of a bad Colts defense this week. Johnson will go for about 150 yards and the Colts? offense won?t be able to keep up.

    MDS?s pick: Titans 28, Colts 21.

Florio?s take:? The winner of this one won?t likely challenge the Texans for the division crown but would be very much alive for a wild-card berth.? The Titans continue their knack for playing in ? and winning ? exciting games.

    Florio?s pick:? Titans 27, Colts 24.

    Raiders at Chiefs

MDS?s take: I?m not a believer in Brady Quinn as the Chiefs? long-term answer at quarterback, but as a short-term fix who won?t turn the ball over as often as Matt Cassel, Quinn should be able to lead Kansas City to a home win over a bad team.

    MDS?s pick: Chiefs 20, Raiders 16.

Florio?s take:? Oakland has won five straight times at Arrowhead Stadium.? With an extra week to prepare and everyone on the hot seat, if the Chiefs don?t beat the Raiders at home now, they possibly never will.

    Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 24, Raiders 10.

    Giants at Cowboys

MDS?s take: Completing a season sweep of the Giants would go a long way toward getting the Cowboys into playoff contention, but I don?t see it happening. The Cowboys? defense will miss linebacker Sean Lee, Giants quarterback Eli Manning will have a big day, and the Giants will improve to 4-0 all time at Cowboys Stadium.

    MDS?s pick: Giants 31, Cowboys 20.

Florio?s take:? The Cowboys aren?t nearly as good as they were in Week One, when they beat the Giants in New Jersey.? The Giants are the same, but this time they won?t get complacent.

    Florio?s pick:? Giants 35, Cowboys 27.

    Saints at Broncos

MDS?s take: Two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks will be on the field in Denver, but Drew Brees has to play against a good Broncos secondary, while Peyton Manning gets to play against a terrible Saints secondary. Advantage Peyton.

    MDS?s pick: Broncos 42, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? When he was the head coach of the Panthers, John Fox held his own against Sean Payton?s Saints.? This time, Fox has a great quarterback ? and the Saints don?t have Payton.

    Florio?s pick:? Broncos 38, Saints 28.

    49ers at Cardinals

MDS?s take: The Cardinals? great start to the season may come to a screeching halt on Monday night.? A home loss to a division rival would be tough for Arizona to overcome, and a win at Arizona will be another step for the 49ers toward establishing themselves as the clear favorites to win the NFC West.

    MDS?s pick: 49ers 20, Cardinals 13.

Florio?s take:? Once atop the NFC West, the Cardinals are close to completing their slide to the basement.? Blame it on the lack of a high-end quarterback and an offensive line to protect him.

    Florio?s pick:? 49ers 24, Cardinals 13.

Pioneering Geron stem cell work may get back on track

THE world's largest embryonic stem cell research programme could be given a new lease of life.

In 2011, biotech giant Geron announced that it was closing its stem cell programme, even though it had conducted a decade of research and treated four people in the first clinical trial of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs).

Now, Geron's former chief executive Thomas Okarma, and founder Michael West, have joined forces with a new subsidiary of BioTime, a biotech company based in Alameda, California. Together they have put forward a bid for Geron's stem cell assets in an effort to revive the programme.

Meanwhile, the four volunteers that received hESCs for spinal injuries are being monitored for adverse effects by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine in San Francisco. "I'm happy to say that everything is still fine," says Kevin McCormack of CIRM, "which is a good sign for anyone buying the cell lines as it gives them a strong starting point for further clinical trials."

Obama team spins positive economic news as 'comeback'

President Barack Obama before his departure on Air Force One at Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport, Thursday, in??President Barack Obama's re-election campaign cheered the modestly improved economic growth data released on Friday as "more evidence" that the country is still clawing back from the 2007-2008 global financial meltdown. Republican candidate Mitt Romney called the news a "discouraging" sign of an anemic recovery.

"While we have more work to do, today's GDP growth report, showing the 13th straight quarter of growth, is more evidence that our economy continues to come back from the worst recession since the Great Depression under President Obama's leadership," Obama campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher said in a statement.

Fetcher's comments came after the Commerce Department reported that Gross Domestic Product grew at a 2 percent annual rate from July to September, compared with 1.3 percent from April to June.

It was unclear whether the news?though positive for Obama?would have much of an impact on his political battle with Romney. Aides to both campaigns say they think only a small percentage of voters can still be persuaded to change their minds about which candidate would be a better steward of the economy.

Romney responded to the data by saying, "Today, we received the latest round of discouraging economic news.?Slow economic growth means slow job growth and declining take-home pay. This is what four years of President Obama's policies have produced. Americans are ready for change?for growth, for jobs, for higher take-home pay.?Paul Ryan and I will deliver it."

Fetcher also said that Romney had proposed a "drastic plan" that would harm economic growth. "His plans would punish the middle class and take us back to the same failed policies that crashed the economy and created record job losses in the first place" he said.

Targeting Latino Voters in Campaign Communications: New ...

Hispanics are now the largest minority group in the United States at 16.5 percent of the population and are one of the most sought after groups of voters in swing areas across the country. However, surveys reveal that Hispanics, compared to non-Hispanic whites and African-Americans, have a lower share of voting eligible citizens registered to vote. Additionally, fewer Hispanic voters are politically engaged. These dynamics put an acute focus on the political mobilization tactics by political campaigns toward Hispanic voters.

New approaches that seek to explain the cause of low Hispanic turnout and political participation focus on mobilization efforts targeted toward Hispanic voters. Research indicates that campaigns spend less time contacting Hispanic households than they do contacting African-Americans and non-Hispanic whites. According to the 2004 American National Election Studies only 16 percent of Hispanics were contacted by political campaigns in that election cycle as opposed to 26 percent of blacks and 49 percent of whites. Moreover, the dominant language spoken inside Hispanic households is another potential explanation for low political participation among Hispanics. 2009 American Community Survey data shows that 35 million Americans 5 years of age and older spoke Spanish at home and close to half of these people did not speak English ?very well?. Only 28 percent of respondents to the 2006 Latino National Survey said they could carry on a conversation ?very? or ?pretty? well in English.

Spanish language advertising has proven particularly effective to Hispanics who primarily speak Spanish or who struggle to carry out a conversation in English. Alternately, Hispanics who are highly incorporated into the political and social fabric of the United States and whose cultural connection to their native heritage is weaker than recent arrivals of Hispanic families, may be less responsive to appeals in Spanish and more receptive to political messages in English.?Minimal research in political science has examined how the language of political communication affects one?s political behavior.

However, Two recent studies examine the impact of language in political communication to Hispanic voters. Don Green and I analyzed whether Spanish-language radio can be used to increase Hispanic voter turnout. In our experimental study, we ran nonpartisan 60-second, radio spots in 206 uncompetitive congressional districts close to the November 2006 midterm elections in order to reach voters typically ignored by political campaigns. The message urged voters to vote and provided some basic information about the congressional races, including the names of the candidates. These ads were aired in Spanish on radio stations that reached a wide Spanish-speaking audience during peak drive times.

Since 1980, Spanish language radio has exploded in popularity. Only television is a larger source for news among Hispanics, according to the 2004 Pew Hispanic Media Study. With a wide and consistent audience, Spanish language radio is a ripe venue for political campaigns to mobilize voters. Yet, radio?s impact on the political behavior of Hispanic voters has received scant attention.

The results of our field experiment imply that 100 gross ratings points (GRPs) of radio advertising increases Hispanic turnout by 4.3 percentage points on average. It seems nonpartisan radio ads urging Latinos to vote can effectively raise levels of participation. Given the cost efficiencies of mass media advertising, the cost effectiveness of radio advertising compares favorably to other forms of outreach, including grassroots tactics like door-to-door canvassing, direct mail and volunteer phone calls. But because the language of the appeals was not varied, the question of whether English language appeals effectively mobilize Hispanic voters remained open.

With UCSD?s Marisa Abrajano, I explored this question more directly in a second field experiment conducted in New York City?s 21st City Council District during the February 2009 special election. Special elections tend to be low turnout affairs that draw few competing political messages making such an environment ideal to study the effects of political communication produced by the language in which they are communicated.

The experiment established two randomly selected treatment groups that received postcard mailings shortly before the election. One group received a nonpartisan mailing in Spanish encouraging them to vote. The other mailer was exactly the same but in English, and the rest of the sample was randomly assigned to the control group and did not receive any mailing.

Those in the English language treatment group experienced a 2.2 percent increase in turnout on average compared to the 1.0 percentage point average increase for those in the Spanish language treatment group. Simply put, the study found more evidence that the English language mailer was more effective in mobilizing participants than the Spanish language mailer. This finding is of critical importance to campaigns because it suggests that they ought to reassess strategies that appeal to Hispanics entirely in Spanish. Spanish language appeals may be effective in stimulating electoral participation among Spanish-speaking Hispanics, but they are not necessarily more effective than messages delivered for English-speaking Hispanics.

Taken together, these studies suggest there is much still to learn about communicating with Latino voters during electoral campaigns. Approaches designed to mobilize and persuade Latinos are quite nuanced, and scholars have only begun to scratch the surface in terms of exploring these nuances. Studies conducted to explore these details further represent an opportunity for scholars to inform strategies adopted by practitioners and campaign professionals in unprecedented ways.

The San Diego real estate market has turned the corner in 3Q12 ...

(San Diego, CA?October 25, 2012) The worst is probably behind us as we begin to see some price appreciation and limited supply of resale homes, according to a recent report by Metrostudy, a national housing data and consulting firm that maintains the most extensive primary database on residential construction in the US housing market.

The San Diego County economic expansion continues to gain traction with positive job growth year over year of 28,000 jobs thru September 2012. ?The California wide expansion of the tech/communications industry appears to be on solid footing,? said Steve Johnson, director of Metrostudy?s Southern California Region. With the unemployment rate at 7.1 % San Diego County is better off than the Southern California region at 9.6 %, or the State with an unemployment rate of 9.7 % and the nation with an unemployment rate of 7.6 %.

?Starts and Closings for the San Diego/Imperial housing market have turned the corner in 3Q2012? said Johnson. Starts for 3Q12 were 631 down less than 1 % from 2Q12 and up 80 % from 3Q11. The Annual Starts rate was 2,670 units up 44 % compared to the 12 months ending September 2011. Closings for 3Q12 increased less than 1 % from 2Q12 with 638 homes closed and up 18 % over 3Q11 Annual Closings totaled 2,529 new homes a increase of 11 percent when, compared with 2,278 new homes closed thru the four quarters ending in September 2011.

New home inventory for the San Diego market totaled 2,324 units at the end of 3Q12 remaining virtually flat over 2Q12 to an 11.6 MOS. Finished Vacant Inventory in the San Diego/Imperial market increased less than 1 % compared to 2Q12 and included 807 homes representing 34 % of the total inventory (UC/FV/MOD). ?Historically finished Vacant totaled 18% to 24% of total inventory,? said Johnson. VDL inventory there are now 1,889 attached and 3,716 detached Vacant Developed Lots in San Diego/Imperial representing a combined 25.2 MOS.

?The worst is probably behind us as we begin to see some price appreciation and limited supply of resale homes. We have even heard of multiple bids coming in on listings. These recoveries do take a long and winding path. Stability in Jumbo loans is important as it helps move up buyers become confidant that if they list their house they can actually buy a replacement house.,? said Johnson.

HTC sees lower revenue, margins in fourth-quarter

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp sees around a 14.5 percent fall in revenue in the fourth quarter from the previous three months, worse than analyst forecasts, while its margins will also decline, underlying the challenge it faces to rebuild in the face of stiff competition.

The company said in a statement on Friday that it expects its fourth-quarter revenue to be about T$60 billion ($2.05 billion), down from T$70.2 billion in the third quarter and below expectations of T$74.0 billion in a poll of 23 analysts by Reuters.

HTC also said it expects a gross margin and an operating margin of around 23 percent and 1 percent, respectively, falling from 25 percent and 7 percent in the previous quarter.

The former contract maker has been suffering a sharp decline in its fortunes since the second half of 2011 following a fairytale ride from contract manufacturer to strong global brand with phones based on Google Inc's Android software.

"I see worse shipments in Q4 because there's nothing exciting about HTC's new models; there won't be a high season for it," said Nomura Securities analyst Aaron Jeng, speaking before the announcement.

In the past few weeks, HTC has aggressively rolled out new models to regain market share. It released the "HTC J" targeted at the Japanese market last month and the "HTC One X+", an upgraded version of its high-end flagship model last Tuesday, both running Google's operating system.

Last month, it also introduced two colorful models running Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software, the Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S, among the first in the market.

HTC said earlier this month its third-quarter net profit fell 79 percent, missing forecasts, as its flagship phones failed to keep pace with Apple Inc's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy range.

Samsung reported on Friday a fourth straight record quarterly profit of $7.4 billion, largely due to strong sales of its Galaxy smartphones.

Some second-tier smartphone vendors such as HTC and Nokia have been struggling with losses or razor-thin profits, though South Korea's LG Electronics Inc said on Wednesday it shipped a record number of smartphones in the third quarter and the division swung back to a profit.

Shares of HTC closed down 4.8 percent on Friday, while the broader market fell 1.8 percent. ($1 = 29.2500 Taiwan dollars)

Germany's secret to staving off the eurocrisis? Manufacturing.

Germany is 'strong and growing' more than almost any other Western economic power, thanks in large part to the country's dedication to its small- and mid-sized manufacturing companies.

For years, people in this tranquil northern Bavarian town turned a deaf ear when outsiders ridiculed Germany for holding on to what the world saw as an outdated industrial model.

And it?s a good thing, as Germany?s industrial backbone has experienced a comeback. Its Mittelstand ? the small- and mid-sized companies that are the backbone of its economy ? helped the country recover from the 2008 financial crisis faster than most countries. Now it is fueling Germany?s export-oriented growth.

According to a study by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW) presented in Berlin Monday, Germany ranks as the fifth best industrial location among 45 world economies, a big jump from the 14th place it held in a similar study in 1995.?

"We did the right thing," says Johannes Petry, who works for Unicor, one of the world's leading manufacturer of corrugators ? the machines making exterior pipes that protect anything from underground telephone cables to sewer pipes. Over the past decade, the 135-employee Bavarian firm has doubled its gross income to roughly ?22 million ($28.6 million) this year. Demand is growing fast in countries that are modernizing their infrastructure, from Hungary to Arab countries.

    'Strong and growing'

Unicor epitomizes the success of the German Mittelstand. Highly specialized and diversified, those companies of 500 or fewer employees have a knack for reinventing the wheel and tapping into world niches quickly. They make the screws, dowels, pipes, parts for machines, tools, and cars that countries like China are buying frenetically as they are industrializing.

Today, Germany is "strong and growing" more than almost any other traditional economic power in the Western world, IW Director Michael H?ther said Monday.

Germany's manufacturing sector creates 23 percent of the country's GDP, compared with 10 percent in France and Great Britain, according to the study.

In the late 1990s, the picture was different. Beset by record unemployment of 4 million, Germany was dubbed the "sick man of Europe."

But unlike other Western European countries, Germany resisted switching to a more service-oriented economy. Instead it consolidated its core industrial base, with more money on research, deals with labor unions on wages, and bold structural reform.

It increased its competitiveness when a Social Democratic government, that of Gerhard Schr?der, embarked on "Agenda 2010:" a reform of the country's social-welfare system and labor market now considered one of the most far reaching made by any Western society in recent years.

The launcher for FINAL FANTASY XIV was recently updated with a countdown clock for midnight (PST) on November 11th.

Players will know that at that time, the current version of FINAL FANTASY XIV will go offline. However, it would appear that the severs going down isn?t the only thing that this counts down to. Twitter user GaiusvanBaelsar discovered that when the countdown finishes, it provides a link to a new trailer titled ?End of an Era?. At present, the link will provide an error as the page is not yet up.

However, fans should keep their eyes peeled as it seems a new trailer is now confirmed to be landing on November 11th.

(AP) ? China has decided to approve new nuclear power plants as part of plans to reduce reliance on oil and coal, ending the moratorium it imposed to review safety in the wake of Japan's Fukushima disaster last year.

The government's decision Wednesday that nuclear power is safe for China takes the country in the opposite direction from some developed nations such as Germany, which decided in the wake of the Fukushima disaster to speed its complete phase-out of nuclear power. Japan is planning to phase it out by 2040.

China is the world's biggest energy consumer, and building new reactors is a key part of Beijing's plans to curb demand for fossil fuels.

The communist government is aggressively promoting alternatives to coal and oil in order to reduce pollution and curb its reliance on imported petroleum, which it sees as a national security risk. Still, coal is forecast to remain the country's main energy source for decades.

The government said Wednesday it hopes to generate 30 percent of China's power from solar, wind and other renewable sources, as well as from nuclear energy, by the end of 2015. That's up from an earlier target of 15 percent from renewables plus 5 percent from nuclear by 2020.

The Cabinet on Wednesday passed plans on nuclear power safety and development that said construction of nuclear power plants would resume "steadily."

Only a small number of plants will be built, and only in coastal areas, according to a Cabinet announcement. The plants will meet the most stringent safety standards, it said.

No date was given for resuming construction of nuclear plants. Despite widespread public concern over possible radiation contamination from the Fukushima disaster and calls for improved safety precautions and emergency preparedness, China remains committed to building up nuclear power to help reduce emissions from coal-fired plants and curb its reliance on costly oil imports.

China suspended approvals of new nuclear plants after a tsunami triggered by the massive March 11, 2011, earthquake crippled the Fukushima plant's cooling and backup power systems, causing partial meltdowns in the worst nuclear disaster since the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe.

China's leaders ordered safety checks for existing nuclear facilities, a review of projects under construction and improved safety standards.

"The inspection results show that nuclear security is guaranteed in China," according to a government report on its energy policy also released Wednesday. "China implements the principle of 'safety first' in the whole process of nuclear power station planning."

China currently has 15 nuclear reactors that provide about 12.5 gigawatts of generating capacity, and another 26 reactors are under construction that will add 30 gigawatts, the report said.

Nuclear power accounts for only 1.8 percent of power in China, it said.

The government report also said that China is now 90 percent energy self-sufficient, but acknowledged high demand will continue to put a strain on resources.

It also warned of "grave challenges" to its energy security in its growing dependence on imported petroleum. Imports accounted for a third of total petroleum consumption in the early 2000s and have jumped to nearly 60 percent now, the report said.

China will also encourage private companies to participate in exploration and development of energy resources, it said.
